Chapter 6 - The Trap is Sprung

Within forty-eight hours, my life turned upside down. I traded my black apron for a security clearance badge that gave me unrestricted access to the Sterling Group's financial archives.
Working beside Daniel Sterling was an eye-opening experience. Away from the high-society crowds, he was methodical, relentlessly hardworking, and fiercely protective of his team. He brought me coffee late at night, debated accounting discrepancies without ego, and listened when I pointed out anomalies in the procurement invoices.
By Thursday evening, I had found the smoking gun: five shell companies registered in Delaware, all receiving multimillion-dollar design consultancy fees signed off by Bianca Vance. The money was being funneled straight into private accounts used to cover Richard Vance's defaulting suburban office parks.
"This is criminal fraud," I told Daniel as we pored over bank statements in the private conference room. "It's not just a breach of contract. It’s grand larceny."
"We take this to the emergency board meeting on Monday," Daniel said, relief washing over his tired features. "With this, we can strip Vance of his board seat and nullify the loan acceleration clause."
Just as we began packing up the files, the heavy glass doors of the executive suite were pushed open.
Two uniformed NYPD officers walked in, accompanied by hotel security director Frank Miller—a man who had worked closely with the Vance family for over a decade. Behind them strolled Bianca Vance, wearing an impeccably tailored cream coat and an expression of venomous triumph.
"Officer, that’s her," Bianca said, pointing directly at me. "That’s the employee who stole my grandmother's emerald pendant."
I froze. "What?"
"What is the meaning of this, Frank?" Daniel demanded, stepping protectively in front of me. "Step down immediately."
"I apologize, Mr. Sterling," Officer Ramirez said politely. "Miss Vance filed a formal police report this morning. She stated that during the altercation at the charity gala, an eight-carat emerald heirloom pendant went missing from her clutch. An anonymous tip alerted security that the item was hidden on hotel premises."
"This is an absurd fabrication," Daniel snapped. "Grace didn't touch her purse."
"Then she won't mind if we check her locker and workstation," Bianca purred, crossing her arms.
"Go right ahead," I said calmly, stepping out from behind Daniel. "I have nothing to hide."
Frank Miller nodded toward one of his guards, who held up an evidence bag containing my personal tote bag from the employee locker room. Frank reached inside, unzipped the inner lining, and pulled out a dazzling platinum necklace set with a massive emerald.

Bianca gasped dramatically. "There it is! My grandmother's necklace!"
