Chapter 11 - The Shadow Returns

The Grand Reopening Gala of the Sterling Atlantic City resort was designed to be the ultimate triumph for the Sterling Group.

Two months after the Vance family’s downfall, the new resort was completely finished. The ballroom was breathtaking, glowing with soft lavender lighting and overflowing with dignitaries, celebrities, and international investors.

I wore an elegant emerald silk gown, circulating among the guests in my official capacity as Vice President. Everywhere I walked, hotel staff greeted me with genuine smiles and deep respect. The culture had completely changed; fairness and dignity were now the law of the land.

Daniel looked magnificent in a bespoke black tuxedo. Whenever our eyes met across the glittering room, he offered a warm, private smile that reminded me of our quiet dinners over the past weeks. We hadn't rushed into a public relationship, but the bond growing between us was unmistakable.

At 10:00 PM, Daniel stepped onto the stage to give his keynote address.

"Ladies and gentlemen, this resort represents more than luxury," Daniel announced into the microphone, his voice resonating through the hall. "It represents integrity. And that integrity was forged by the extraordinary men and women who work behind the scenes every single day."

Applause erupted through the hall.

As I clapped, a young banquet server approached me, holding a silver tray with a sealed black envelope.

"Ms. Mercer?" the server whispered nervously. "A courier just dropped this off at the front desk. He said it was urgent and marked strictly personal."

"Thank you," I said, picking up the envelope. It bore no return address, only my name written in bold, jagged red ink.

Frowning, I stepped away from the crowd into a quiet side alcove near the emergency exit. I sliced open the envelope and pulled out a single glossy photograph.

The breath was violently sucked from my lungs.

The photograph showed my sister Chloe sitting in her hospital recovery room in Queens. But she wasn't alone. Standing behind Chloe’s wheelchair, her gloved hand resting lightly on Chloe’s shoulder, was Bianca Vance.

On the back of the photo, a message was scrawled in lipstick:

*Did you really think taking my ring meant you won, little girl? Look up.*

Suddenly, a deafening explosion rattled the far end of the ballroom.

The entire venue plunged into pitch-black darkness. Screams of terror tore through the crowd as emergency sirens began to wail.

Before I could move, a heavy, gloved hand clamped tightly over my mouth from behind, and a cold blade pressed against the side of my throat.

"Make a single sound," a raspy voice whispered into my ear, "and your sister dies before the lights come back on."
