Chapter 9 - The Collapse of an Empire

At 8:15 a.m., Daniel’s company phone rang. It had been ringing continuously for an hour, but this time, Thomas Reed answered it on speaker.

"Daniel, where the hell are you?!" boomed the panicked voice of Marcus Vance, the chief operations officer of Vance Global’s New Jersey freight hub. "The gate systems won't accept our corporate credentials! The banking portals are frozen! Every terminal from Newark to Buffalo has a digital lock screen saying all managerial authorities are suspended pending an emergency trustee audit!"

Daniel looked up, his face ghostly pale. "Marcus... I..."

"We have two hundred freight haulers idling on the interstate!" Marcus roared. "If the fuel lines aren't authorized in thirty minutes, the entire eastern corridor shuts down! Who is Caroline Vance? Her name is showing up as the sole executive director on the SEC registry!"

Thomas Reed calmly took the phone. "Marcus. This is Thomas Reed, chief legal counsel for Arthur Vance’s estate. Daniel Vance has been relieved of all operational duties effective midnight. Caroline Vance is the new Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of the Board. Dispatch orders are being re-authorized under her private credential right now. The company is operating normally. Daniel is no longer an employee."

Thomas tapped the screen, cutting the call.

Daniel dropped to his knees on the marble floor. "Caroline... please. Don't take the company. It's my entire life. I’ve worked there for seventeen years! I don't know how to do anything else!"

"You didn't work there, Daniel," I said, looking down at him. "You stole from it. You used dad's legacy as a personal piggy bank while running safety margins into the ground. Did you think I didn't see the audit reports? You deferred maintenance on forty-two tractor-trailers last year just so you could buy Tyler that vacation home in Aspen."

"I'll pay it back!" Daniel sobbed, grabbing at the hem of my coat. "I swear to God, Caroline, I'll pay every dime back!"

"With what?" Thomas Reed asked, crossing his arms. "Your personal accounts are frozen. The Aspen chalet was foreclosed on thirty minutes ago by the trust’s receivership team. You have no credit. You have no stock. And by the end of this week, the federal prosecutor will be presenting your embezzlement records to a grand jury."

Evelyn, Daniel’s wife, let out a wail of terror, dropping her designer purse onto the floor as two deputies escorted her toward the front entrance. Tyler stood beside her, staring at the floor, crying silently as his entire world of unearned privilege evaporated into the freezing morning air.

"Out," Sheriff Brooks ordered, placing a heavy hand on Daniel’s shoulder. "Both of you. Now."

Margaret refused to walk. Two deputies had to physically flank her, holding her by the arms as she screamed curses that echoed all the way down the grand driveway.

"You will rot in hell for this, Caroline! You hear me?! Arthur cursed the day you were born! You will die penniless just like your husband!"

Her shrieks were cut short as the front door closed behind them with a heavy, resounding thud.

The grand mansion fell into absolute, sacred silence.
