Chapter 7 - The Eviction of Pride

Margaret slapped the papers out of Thomas’s hand. The white sheets scattered across the snowy limestone porch.

"Get off my porch!" she shrieked, her aristocratic facade shattering into hysterical rage. "You ungrateful little gutter rat, Caroline! You brought the police to my home on New Year's Day? After everything I gave your father? After the disgrace you brought to this family by breeding with a penniless paramedic?"

Sheriff Brooks didn't flinch. He signaled with two fingers.

Two deputies immediately ascended the steps, stepping between Margaret and the doorway. Another deputy unclipped a pair of heavy wire cutters and walked past Daniel toward the three-car garage where Margaret’s Bentley and Daniel’s Mercedes AMG were parked.

"What are you doing to my cars?!" Daniel screamed, lunging toward the deputy.

"Touch him, Daniel, and you spend New Year's Day in a holding cell for assaulting an officer," Sheriff Brooks warned, his hand resting firmly on his taser holster. "Those vehicles are titled under Vance Global Logistics. The corporate lease agreements were terminated at midnight due to non-payment and unauthorized personal use. They are being repossessed immediately."

A tow truck backed up the driveway, its backup beeper piercing the dawn quiet like an executioner's bell.

"Daniel, do something!" Margaret cried, turning to her son. "Call Judge Harrison! Call the district attorney!"

Daniel pulled out his phone, his hands shaking violently as he dialed. He held the phone to his ear, pacing frantically across the marble foyer.

"Pick up... pick up, damn it..." he muttered.

"Judge Harrison won't take your call, Daniel," I said, speaking for the first time. My voice was calm, measured, devoid of anger—which only made it more terrifying. "Judge Harrison recused himself two weeks ago when the state attorney general opened an inquiry into your offshore accounts in Grand Cayman."

Daniel lowered the phone, his face draining of all color. "What did you say?"

"Your Caribbean holding company, 'Vance Horizon LLC,'" Thomas Reed supplied, opening his briefcase to reveal a thick stack of bank transaction logs stamped with federal subpoenas. "You thought you were cleverly laundering operational capital from the company's regional accounts. What you didn't realize was that the banking infrastructure of Vance Global Logistics is monitored by an independent forensic compliance board established by Arthur Vance."

Thomas pulled out an audit summary. "Every dollar you skimmed over the last seven years didn't come from company profits, Daniel. It came directly from an escrow line personally guaranteed by your own personal assets. In short: you don't own eighty million dollars. You personally owe eighty-four million dollars to the Ironwood Trust."

Daniel staggered backward, leaning against the mahogany front door for support. "No... that's impossible. The accountants... the board..."

"The board answers to the majority shareholder," I said, stepping across the threshold onto the marble floor.

"Get out of my house!" Margaret hissed, lunging toward me with her manicured nails outstretched.

Sheriff Brooks caught her wrist firmly, forcing her back. "Mrs. Vance! Back up right now! You are currently trespassing on private property owned by Caroline Vance."

"Caroline doesn't own this!" Margaret screamed, tears of fury streaking her heavy makeup. "She is a nobody! A failure! She doesn't deserve a penny of Arthur's money!"

"Every penny of Arthur's money," Thomas said with brutal finality, "belongs to her."
