Chapter 6 - The Knock at Dawn

At 6:00 a.m. sharp, the roar of four heavy engines echoed up the tree-lined driveway of Vance Crest Estate, crunching loudly over the fresh powder.

Inside the master suite, Margaret Vance stirred beneath her eight-hundred-thread-count Egyptian cotton sheets. Her head throbbed from four glasses of vintage champagne. When the sharp, rhythmic pounding began at the front entrance, she groaned in irritation.

"Who on earth..." she muttered, slipping into a silver silk robe and pulling the velvet sash tight around her waist.

Down the grand staircase, the banging grew louder, rattling the heavy brass lions on the double oak doors. Daniel emerged from the second-floor guest wing, barefoot and disheveled in a designer sweat suit.

"Is that a delivery?" Daniel grumbled, rubbing his bloodshot eyes. "I didn't order anything for this morning."

"Whoever it is, I will have them fired before noon," Margaret hissed, marching down the marble steps with the haughty posture of a monarch whose sleep had been interrupted by commoners.

She unlocked the heavy deadbolts and swung the door open, her face twisted in fury. "How dare you make this kind of noise at—"

The words froze in her throat.

Standing on the limestone portico were Sheriff Brooks, four armed deputies, Thomas Reed, and a court stenographer holding a digital recording rig. Behind them sat two flatbed tow trucks and an empty commercial moving van.

And standing directly between the sheriff and Thomas Reed was me.

Margaret’s eyes narrowed into slits of icy contempt. "Caroline? What is the meaning of this circus? Have you completely lost your mind?"

Daniel pushed past his mother, glaring at me with raw disgust. "Caroline, get your pathetic self off this property before I call the state police and have you arrested for trespassing."

Sheriff Brooks took one deliberate step forward, unhooking a heavy manila folder from under his arm.

"Mr. Daniel Vance. Mrs. Margaret Vance. I am serving you with an emergency Writ of Immediate Possession, Order of Trespass, and Judicial Seizure issued by the Supreme Court of New York."

Daniel burst into a loud, mocking laugh. "A writ of possession? On my house? Sheriff, you must have taken a bribe from this lunatic. My father built this house. My mother holds the deed!"

"No, Daniel," Thomas Reed spoke, his voice cutting through the frosty morning air like a surgical scalpel. "Your mother does not hold the deed. Your mother held a conditional occupancy license issued under the Arthur Vance Family Trust. That license was revoked at midnight."

Margaret sneered, clutching her robe. "Thomas, you senile old fool! Arthur left this estate to me in his will seventeen years ago! You drew up the will yourself!"

"Arthur left you a will, Margaret," Thomas replied, stepping forward and extending a red-stamped document. "Which was superseded thirty days before his passing by the Ironwood Trust Indenture. You were never an owner. You were a tenant."

May you like

Thomas looked at his watch. "And as of 6:03 a.m., your tenancy has expired."
