Chapter 7 - Whispers from the Past

The damp morning air of downtown Chicago did little to cool the fire burning in Ethan Vance’s chest. The courthouse steps were swarming with reporters, their flashes popping in rapid succession, but Ethan didn't break his stride. Every microphone thrust toward his face, every shouted question about his disgraced socialite wife and her mother, was reduced to white noise.
All that mattered was in the back of his mind: Marcus’s words about Clara.
"Someone backing her?" Ethan asked, his voice low and dangerous as he and Marcus slipped into the back of a blacked-out SUV waiting at the private curb. "Clara’s parents died ten years ago. Her family estate was settled before we even met."
Marcus tapped his leather briefcase, his face etched with exhaustion and unease. "That’s what public records show, Ethan. But Keller told the Assistant U.S. Attorney that Vanessa was receiving encrypted wire transfers through shell corporations based in Belize and Zurich. Every single one coincided with a specific demand: isolate Lily, humiliate her publicly, break her spirit until child protective services intervened."
Ethan’s knuckles turned white against his knees. The sheer depravity of it made his stomach turn. Vanessa hadn't just acted out of petty jealousy or greed; she had followed an orchestrated script designed to systematically destroy an eight-year-old girl.
"Why?" Ethan demanded.
"The Montgomery Trust," Marcus said quietly. "Clara’s maternal grandfather didn't leave everything to Clara’s parents. He set aside an irrevocable trust for Clara’s direct descendant. Lily is the sole beneficiary on her eighteenth birthday—or, if Lily is rendered mentally incapacitated, the trust defaults to a contingent family trustee."
The SUV pulled away from the curb, slicing smoothly through the mid-morning traffic toward Ethan's estate in Lake Forest. For the first time since the gala turned into a nightmare, Ethan felt the chill of an unseen predator lurking in the shadows.
"Find out who that contingent trustee is," Ethan commanded. "Subpoena every bank, every sealed probate record. If someone dared to use my daughter as a pawn, I won't just put them in prison. I’ll erase them."
Twenty minutes later, the iron gates of the Vance estate swung open. The grandeur of the stone mansion felt hollow now, tainted by the echoes of Vanessa’s cruelty. But as Ethan stepped through the heavy oak front doors, the oppressive silence was broken by the sound of running footsteps on the hardwood floor.
"Daddy!"
Lily threw herself into his arms. Ethan caught her instantly, dropping to his knees and burying his face into her shoulder. The faint scent of strawberry shampoo and childhood innocence washed over the grime of the courthouse.
"I'm here, baby," Ethan whispered, his throat tightening as he kissed her cheek. "Daddy's right here. And nobody is ever going to hurt you again."
She held onto his lapel, her small fingers clutching the fabric like an anchor. "Dr. Martinez said you were going to make pancakes with chocolate chips. With the smiley faces."
Ethan managed a genuine smile, the first one in weeks. He stood up, lifting her into his arms. "The biggest smiley faces you’ve ever seen. Let’s go to the kitchen."

As Lily giggled and pointed toward the pantry, Ethan glanced toward the window. Parked outside the perimeter wall was a nondescript gray sedan that Marcus’s private security detail hadn't cleared. Ethan made eye contact with his head of security standing by the foyer, giving a single, subtle nod. The hunt had begun.
