Chapter 3 - Behind Locked Doors

The ballroom emptied with frantic speed. Guests scrambled for their coats and umbrellas, whispering frantically among themselves, terrified of being named as accessories or having their reputations ruined by association. The rumble of expensive luxury cars pulling out of the circular driveway shook the damp night air.
Ethan carried Lily straight up the spiral staircase, bypassing the second-floor living area and heading directly to his third-floor master suite. His long-time housekeeper, Maria, met him at the landing with tears streaming down her face.
“Mr. Ethan! Oh God, I didn’t know!” Maria wept, clutching her apron. “Vanessa told the staff we were dismissed at three o’clock. She said it was a private caterer event and threatened to fire me if I stepped foot in the main house before tomorrow morning!”
“It’s okay, Maria,” Ethan said gently, his tone softening only for her. “Run a warm bath for Lily. Find her thickest flannel pajamas and make her some hot chocolate. Stay in her bedroom with her. Lock the door from the inside, and do not open it for anyone except me.”
“Yes, sir. Right away, sir.” Maria gently took Lily’s hand.
Lily looked up at her father, her cheeks stained with dried tears and red marks from where the rough metal edges of the chain had pressed into her delicate skin. “Daddy… did you really want to send me away?”
The question shattered Ethan’s heart into a million pieces. He knelt down again, placing his warm hands over her cold, fragile ears. “Never, Lily. Not in a million years. You are my whole world. Your mother made me promise to protect you, and I failed you tonight. But I swear on my life, nobody will ever hurt you in this house again. Do you hear me?”
Lily nodded slowly, a tiny ember of hope returning to her wide brown eyes. “I hid something under my mattress, Daddy. A piece of paper Vanessa dropped yesterday.”
Ethan’s eyes sharpened. “What kind of paper, baby?”
“It had big stamps on it. She was talking on the phone to a man named Mr. Keller. She said if she got your thumbprint while you were asleep, the money from Mommy’s foundation would transfer to an offshore account before Monday.”
A cold dread settled into Ethan’s stomach. Keller was his estate attorney’s junior partner—a man Vanessa had insisted on hiring six months ago to oversee their domestic filings.
Ethan walked into his private study down the hall. The heavy mahogany door, which was supposed to be secured with a biometric deadbolt, had scratch marks around the frame. Someone had used an override key.
Stepping inside, Ethan saw that his safe behind the oil painting of his late wife, Clara, was wide open. Inside lay folders containing Lily’s trust fund—the massive multi-million-dollar inheritance left exclusively to the child by Clara’s family.
Lying on top of the desk was a newly drafted legal document: *Revocable Living Trust Amendment and Designation of Sole Conservator.*
Ethan flipped through the pages with trembling fingers. The document granted Vanessa full legal, financial, and physical custody of Lily in the event of Ethan’s “medical incapacitation.” Tucked inside the back flap was a small amber glass vial labeled *Zolpidem Tartrate*—a concentrated sedative.

Vanessa hadn't just planned to humiliate his daughter to break her spirit. She had planned to drug him tonight, forge his digital authorization, take control of Lily’s trust, and discard both of them like garbage.
Downstairs, the distant wail of police sirens began to pierce the rain.
