Chapter 6 - No Bail, No Mercy

Forty-five minutes later, Arthur Keller was tackled to the tarmac of Teterboro Airport by four undercover federal agents as he tried to board a Gulfstream IV with two leather briefcases filled with forged trust documents and bearer bonds.

By two o'clock that afternoon, the preliminary arraignment hearing for Vanessa Higgins and Evelyn Higgins was called to order in Room 402 of the County Criminal Courthouse.

The courtroom was packed to capacity. The viral videos taken by the guests had spread across social media like wildfire overnight. Headlines across every major national news outlet blasted the story: *Billionaire’s Wife Uses Dog Chain on Stepmother's Eight-Year-Old Orphan at Society Gala.* Public outrage was boiling over outside the courthouse steps, with hundreds of protesters holding signs demanding justice for little Lily.

Vanessa was brought into the courtroom wearing an orange institutional jumpsuit, her makeup washed off, her dyed blonde hair messy and unwashed. Evelyn sat next to her, slumping in her seat, glaring venomously at Ethan, who sat in the front row behind the prosecutor’s bench, dressed in a sharp charcoal suit.

Vanessa’s high-priced defense attorney, Jonathan Blake, stood up confidently before Judge Eleanor Morales.

“Your Honor,” Blake began smoothly, “my clients are facing an unprecedented media witch-hunt. What occurred at the residence was an unfortunate, poorly judged domestic incident blown out of proportion by sensationalist social media posts. Mrs. Vance has no violent felony convictions. We request that bail be set at a reasonable amount of fifty thousand dollars so she can prepare her defense from home.”

Assistant District Attorney Sarah Lin stood up immediately, her voice cutting through the room like a razor blade.

“Your Honor, the Commonwealth strongly objects to any bail. This was not a domestic misunderstanding. This was a calculated, sadistic campaign of torture and premeditated fraud against an eight-year-old child.”

Lin stepped forward, plugging a flash drive into the courtroom’s media console.

“We have just received supplementary evidence secured by Mr. Vance’s private legal team and validated by the FBI,” Lin declared, turning toward the bench. “It includes audio recordings, intercepted encrypted communications with co-conspirator Arthur Keller—who is currently in federal custody—and interior security footage from the mansion that the defendant believed she had erased.”

Vanessa gasped, clutching her attorney’s sleeve. “What? That’s impossible! I deleted the cloud backups!”

“Be quiet!” Blake hissed under his breath.

The courtroom monitors flickered to life. A video played from the mansion's kitchen, dated two days before the party. It showed Vanessa pouring clear drops from the amber sedative bottle into Ethan’s personal decanter of single-malt scotch, while Evelyn watched by the counter, laughing and saying, *“Make sure it’s enough to knock him out for twelve hours. Once the judge sees the video of that little monster eating off the floor, she’ll grant temporary custody in an hour.”*

Judge Morales’s face hardened into stone. She looked over the top of her reading glasses directly at Vanessa and Evelyn. The disgust in the judge's eyes was unmistakable.

“Counsel,” Judge Morales said to Blake, her tone icy enough to freeze water. “Your request for bail is denied.”

Vanessa let out a strangled shriek. “Your Honor, you can’t do this! I am Ethan Vance’s legal wife!”

“Not for long,” Judge Morales replied without blinking. “Given the overwhelming evidence of flight risk, witness tampering, child abuse, and federal grand larceny, the defendants will remain remanded without bail at the county detention facility pending grand jury indictment.”

The gavel slammed down with a resounding crack that silenced the courtroom.

As the bailiffs moved in to escort Vanessa and Evelyn back through the holding cell doors, Vanessa turned her wild, bloodshot eyes toward Ethan. “Ethan! Tell them! Tell them you forgive me! You loved me! You can’t leave me in here!”

Ethan didn't say a single word. He simply adjusted the collar of his coat, turned his back on her, and walked out through the heavy double doors into the crowded courthouse hallway.

Waiting for him near the private exit was Marcus Sterling and a child psychologist who had spent the morning evaluating Lily.

“How is she?” Ethan asked immediately, his voice thick with concern, the ice in his demeanor instantly melting away.

“She’s safe, Ethan,” the doctor said gently. “She asked if you were coming home to make pancakes like you promised.”

Ethan swallowed the lump in his throat and nodded. “I am. Right now.”

“There’s one more thing,” Marcus whispered, stepping closer so the surrounding reporters couldn't overhear. “Keller started talking to the feds five minutes ago to save his own skin.”

Ethan paused, looking at his lawyer. “And?”

“He says Vanessa wasn't the mastermind,” Marcus murmured, his eyes dead serious. “He says there was someone else backing her from the beginning. Someone with a personal vendetta against your late wife Clara’s family.”
