Chapter 5 - A Suite of My Own

The humiliation radiating off Vanessa was almost tangible. Several resort guests sitting in the lounge quickly averted their eyes, pretending to read their menus, while a concierge manager quietly stepped behind the desk to assist Leilani.
"Is there another payment method you would like to provide, Mr. Miller?" the manager asked, his voice low, firm, and thoroughly unimpressed by the drama unfolding in his pristine lobby. "We cannot hold the Royal Villa without full settlement. We have a waitlist of guests arriving tonight."
Michael looked like a broken child. He turned toward me, his hands trembling at his sides. "Mom... please. We don't have anywhere else to go. Everything on the island is booked for the holiday weekend. Please help us."
"Michael, didn't you hear your wife?" I said softly, stepping closer to the desk. "She specifically asked me to stay out of your way. She told me this was your vacation, paid for by your hard work. Stepping in now would be an insult to your independence."
"You spiteful old woman," Vanessa snarled, tears of pure rage spilling over her mascara. "You planned this! You brought us all the way to Hawaii just to abandon us on the street!"
"I brought you nowhere, Vanessa," I replied, my voice dropping to a cool, razor-sharp whisper that cut through her hysteria. "I paid for your first-class plane tickets. I arranged a luxury retreat because I wanted to celebrate my son. But you mistook my generosity for weakness. You thought you could publicly step on my neck and treat me like your personal ATM, and that I would smile and say thank you."
I turned my back on her, facing Leilani.
"Excuse me, Leilani," I said pleasantly. "I believe I have a separate reservation under Carol Miller for the Orchid Garden Bungalow?"
Leilani tapped a few keys, and her face visibly brightened with relief. "Ah, yes, Ms. Miller! A private bungalow, fully prepaid with your loyalty rewards points, including full spa access and private concierge service. Your suite is ready right now."
Vanessa’s jaw dropped. "You... you booked another room?"
"Of course I did," I said smoothly, accepting the wooden electronic key card from Leilani. "I am sixty-two years old, Vanessa. I prefer my own space, away from ungrateful noise."
"Mom!" Michael begged, taking a step toward me. "What about us? What are we supposed to do?"
"You're a grown man, Michael," I said, looking at him with a mixture of profound sorrow and unwavering resolve. "You chose this woman. You chose to let her disrespect the mother who built your entire life from scratch. Now, you get to figure out how to take care of her."
The manager cleared his throat. "Mr. and Mrs. Miller, since the payment for the Royal Villa cannot be authorized, I must release the hold. If you cannot provide a valid card within the next ten minutes, I will have to ask security to escort you off the premises."
Vanessa began to weep hysterically, dropping down onto her designer luggage. Michael buried his face in his hands.

I took my key, wheeled my carry-on toward the private garden elevator, and left them standing in the ruins of their own arrogance.
