Chapter 4 - The Declining Balance

Vanessa’s face went from sun-kissed bronze to an ashen, sickly white. She blinked rapidly, her rehearsed aristocratic demeanor fracturing into pure panic.

"That’s impossible," she stammered, her voice rising an octave. "Check again. That card should be active! There has to be a glitch in your computer."

Leilani remained impeccably polite. "There is no glitch, ma'am. The cardholder, Carol Miller, manually removed the corporate card authorization via our portal two hours ago. As of right now, there is no card securing this villa."

At the mention of my name, Vanessa whipped her head around. Her gaze locked onto me like a heat-seeking missile. I was standing near a towering palm tree, quietly sipping the iced pineapple water that a staff member had handed me.

"You," Vanessa hissed, taking two aggressive steps toward me. "What did you do?"

"I didn't do anything, Vanessa," I said gently, keeping my tone conversational and completely even. "You told everyone at Gate 28 that I hadn't paid a dime for this trip. You told the whole airport that you and Michael saved up for years. I simply realized that if you had paid for it all, there was no reason for my credit card to be cluttering up your reservation."

Vanessa’s mouth opened and closed. She looked as though she had been slapped across the face with a frozen fish.

Michael looked like he wanted the floor to crack open and swallow him whole. "Mom..." he choked out, his voice cracking. "Mom, please. Don't do this here."

"I am not doing anything, Michael," I said, looking directly into my son’s eyes. "I am simply honoring your wife’s public declarations. You stood right beside her while she humiliated me in front of dozens of people. You stayed silent. Silence is agreement."

"Carol, this is childish!" Vanessa shrieked, no longer caring about the other wealthy guests who were now turning to stare. "We have non-refundable flights! Our itinerary is planned! Put the card back on!"

"No," I said simply.

"Michael!" Vanessa spun on her husband, her fingernails digging into his forearm. "Fix this! Put your card down! Show her we don't need her charity!"

Michael swallowed hard. His face turned bright crimson. He reached into his leather wallet with trembling hands and pulled out his navy Chase Sapphire card. He had insisted on getting that card two years ago to build up his personal credit, but I knew his financial reality far better than Vanessa thought I did.

"Here," Michael muttered to Leilani, handing over the piece of metal. "Put it on this."

Leilani accepted the card and slid it through the terminal. The machine beeped. A tense pause stretched for five agonizing seconds.

*DECLINED.*

"I’m sorry, sir," Leilani said softly. "The transaction did not clear."

"Try it again!" Vanessa demanded, her voice shrill. "Run it again!"

"Running it again will not change the limit, Vanessa," Michael whispered harshly, sweat beading across his forehead. "My credit limit on that card is five thousand dollars. The room is almost fourteen thousand."

"Then use your other card! Your savings!"

"What savings, Vanessa?!" Michael suddenly yelled, his frustration boiling over right there in the five-star lobby. "You spent our entire liquid savings on your designer wardrobe, your fillers, and that influencer retreat to Miami last month! We have nine hundred dollars in our checking account!"

The lobby went dead silent.

Vanessa looked as if she had been stripped naked in front of a stadium crowd.
