Chapter 3 - Welcome to Paradise, Please Provide Payment

Kahului Airport smelled of plumeria and warm, humid salt air. By the time we retrieved our luggage from the carousel, the sun was beginning to dip toward the horizon, painting the sky in violent shades of crimson and violet.

Vanessa was energized, completely in her element. She had already posted three stories from the tarmac, hashtagging every luxury influencer account she could think of. When she noticed me standing near the rental shuttles, she scoffed and turned to Michael.

"Tell your mother she needs to find her own cab," Vanessa instructed him loudly, not even bothering to lower her voice. "The resort transfer we booked is a private black car. It’s only meant for two."

Michael looked exhausted. His shoulders were curled inward. "Vanessa, please. There’s plenty of room in the SUV. Mom can just—"

"Michael, boundaries!" she snapped, waving a manicured finger in front of his face. "We talked about this. This is our anniversary. If she wants to stalk us on our vacation, she can coordinate her own logistics."

I didn't say a word. I simply stepped back, waved down an airport taxi, and gave the driver the address of the Makena Sands.

The Makena Sands was one of the most exclusive properties on the island, tucked away behind towering lava-rock walls and cascading waterfalls. When my taxi pulled up beneath the open-air grand porte-cochère, the private black suburban was already idling nearby. Vanessa and Michael were already at the reception desk.

The lobby was a masterpiece of polished koa wood, tranquil koi ponds, and marble flooring. Warm island music drifted from hidden speakers, and staff members walked past carrying silver trays of cold lemongrass towels and welcome mai tais.

As I walked in, carrying my own small rolling suitcase, Vanessa was leaning across the solid marble check-in counter, beaming at the concierge.

"Reservation under Vanessa and Michael Miller," she purred, tapping her gold-accented nails on the stone. "The Royal Oceanfront Villa. We’re celebrating our anniversary."

The receptionist, a graceful Hawaiian woman named Leilani, typed into her terminal. Her warm smile remained professional, but her eyebrows twitched slightly as she read the notes on her screen.

"Aloha, Mr. and Mrs. Miller. Welcome to Makena Sands," Leilani said. "Yes, I see the reservation for the three-bedroom Royal Villa. A gorgeous choice."

"Only the best for us," Vanessa said, casting a smirk over her shoulder, noticing that I had just entered the lobby. She wanted an audience. She wanted me to watch her triumph.

"Wonderful," Leilani said smoothly. "Now, to finalize the registration and release the electronic key cards, I just need a credit card for the remaining balance of eleven thousand, eight hundred and fifty dollars, as well as the incidentals deposit."

Vanessa froze. Her smile remained plastered on her face, but her eyes narrowed into sharp slits.

"Excuse me?" Vanessa chuckled nervously. "The balance? That’s already paid. We prepaid the deposit months ago."

"The initial deposit was paid, yes," Leilani explained patiently, turning the monitor slightly. "However, the primary payment method on file was removed prior to your arrival. Our system policy requires the remaining balance to be cleared in full before check-in. The total due right now is thirteen thousand, eight hundred and fifty dollars."

The silence that fell over the marble desk was so heavy that the splashing of the koi pond sounded deafening.
