Chapter 9 - Salt in the Wound

What followed was pure, unadulterated chaos.
Deputy Kowalski and his partner moved swiftly, intercepting Vanessa as she tried to bolt toward the garden maze. With a swift, practiced motion, the officers pinned her arms behind her back. The metallic click of the handcuffs echoed like a gunshot through the silent afternoon air.
"Get off me! Do you know who I am?!" Vanessa screamed, thrashing wildly. Her hair came completely undone, hanging in stringy, sweat-soaked strands around her beet-red face. "Brandon! Don't just stand there, tell them to let me go! You're my husband!"
Brandon Mitchell didn't move an inch. Instead, he reached into his breast pocket, pulled out the gold wedding band he had slipped onto his finger barely twenty minutes earlier, and let it drop onto the stone floor. It bounced twice before rolling into the drain.
"Consider our union null and void, Vanessa," Brandon said coldly. "My lawyers will file for an annulment before business hours open tomorrow morning on grounds of fraud and misrepresentation."
"Brandon, you coward!" Vanessa shrieked, kicking her legs as two deputies dragged her down the marble steps toward the awaiting squad car. "I hate you! I hate all of you! Samantha, you will burn in hell for this!"
The guests were already scrambling for the exits like rats fleeing a sinking ship. Women in designer couture ruined their high heels as they rushed down the gravel paths to reach the valet line, desperate to escape before the local press arrived. But they were already too late.
Hovering just outside the estate's wrought-iron perimeter were two news vans from New York’s top financial and tabloid outlets. Marcus had alerted them the moment Vanessa turned on the hose. Cameras with long telephoto lenses clicked incessantly, capturing every degrading second: Vanessa being shoved into the back of a police car in her torn bridal gown, Eleanor sobbing on the pavement like a beggar, and Richard standing paralyzed by the ruin of his entire life's work.
Arthur Mitchell stepped up to me once more, his hands clasped together in an attitude of desperate supplication.
"Ms. Carter... please," Arthur whispered, his voice cracking. "Brandon made a terrible mistake by associating with them. We cut ties with the Sterlings right here, right now, publicly. I will issue a press release denouncing them. Just... please don't pull the debt facility on Mitchell & Croft. It would destroy four hundred innocent employees and three generations of my family’s work."
I looked at Arthur. Unlike the Sterlings, Arthur was a ruthless businessman, but he wasn't completely blind. He was a shark who had bet on the wrong horse, and he knew it.
"Your refinancing stays on the table under three conditions, Arthur," I said, leaning in slightly.
"Anything. Name it," he said, breathing a sigh of desperate hope.
"First, Mitchell & Croft immediately terminates all supply contracts and business relationships with Richard Sterling’s logistics firm, permanently blacklisting him across the entire Northeast corridor."
"Done," Arthur agreed instantly, without blinking. "Consider it signed."
"Second, you will pay the full three hundred and fifty thousand dollars owed to this venue for today's damages within the hour, plus a twenty percent cancellation penalty."
"I will authorize the wire from my personal account right this second."
"And third," I added, looking straight into his eyes, "if Brandon ever sets foot on any property owned by Carter Holdings, or ever attempts to contact me, I will bankrupt you overnight."
May you like
Arthur nodded vigorously, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Understood, Ms. Carter. Perfectly understood. God bless you."
He turned and practically shoved Brandon toward their town car, leaving Richard and Eleanor alone on the sprawling, empty terrace.
