Chapter 6 - The Check Comes Due

I descended the final step and stopped just two feet from Arthur Mitchell, looking down at him with cool detachment.

"Good evening, Arthur," I said, my voice carrying effortlessly across the silent ballroom lawn. "It seems your son's wedding has hit a minor financial obstacle."

"Samantha!" Richard bellowed, his face a grotesque mask of confusion and rage as he stumbled forward. "What kind of sick game are you playing? Why is Arthur Mitchell calling you Ms. Carter? Did you sleep your way into some executive's office? Tell him who you really are!"

Julian Davies, my attorney, stepped smoothly in front of Richard, holding up a single hand.

"Mr. Sterling, you are addressing Samantha Carter, founder, majority shareholder, and Chief Executive Officer of Carter Holdings," Julian announced in a razor-sharp tone that resonated across every corner of the estate. "She is the sole legal owner of the Rosewood Grand Estate, along with forty-two other hospitality and commercial developments across North America."

A collective gasp rippled through the hundreds of high-society guests.

Vanessa looked like she had been struck by lightning. She grabbed Brandon's arm so tightly her knuckles turned white. "No... no, that’s impossible! She was broke! She lived in a studio apartment! Dad said she failed!"

"I told you twelve years ago that I was starting my own hospitality firm, Vanessa," I said quietly, turning my gaze to my little sister. "I took my middle name, Carter, because I was sick of carrying the Sterling name. Sick of the insults. Sick of being the family's punching bag."

I looked at my mother, whose face had completely drained of color.

"You thought I came here today to beg for your approval," I continued, taking a slow step toward them. "You thought you could drag me in front of three hundred people, call me a disappointment, and hose me down like an animal in the yard."

"Samantha, please..." Eleanor whimpered, tears of sudden humiliation welling in her eyes. "We... we were just joking! It was family humor! You know how Vanessa gets on her special day..."

"Family humor?" I tilted my head, looking at the puddle of vintage champagne soaking into the hem of Vanessa's designer gown. "I don't find it funny, Eleanor. And neither does my accounting department."

I turned back to Arthur Mitchell. The man looked ready to faint.

"Arthur," I said calmly.

"Yes, Ms. Carter? Anything. Whatever you need," Arthur pleaded, sweating through his custom tuxedo.

"Your son and his bride have five minutes to settle the outstanding three hundred and fifty thousand dollars in cash or wire transfer. If the payment is not verified by five-thirty, I am evicting this wedding party from my property, canceling Mitchell & Croft's debt refinancing with my firm, and calling the local precinct to press felony assault and criminal vandalism charges against Vanessa Sterling."

"Samantha, you can't do this!" Vanessa screamed, her voice cracking in hysterical desperation. "Brandon! Brandon, pay her! Please!"

Brandon pulled his arm violently away from her grip, staring at his new wife with utter disgust. "Pay her with what, Vanessa? My father's firm is on the line! You lied to me! You told me your family was wealthy enough to cover this venue easily!"

"We are wealthy!" Vanessa cried, turning to her father. "Dad, tell him! Write the check!"

Richard Sterling stood frozen, his eyes hollow, looking like a man standing on the edge of an abyss.

I checked my watch.

"Four minutes," I whispered.
