Chapter 4 - The Fine Print

Brandon Mitchell stumbled over, his tie slightly loosened, smelling faintly of bourbon. At thirty-one, he looked like the archetype of a spoiled private-equity prince—handsome, arrogant, and entirely unaccustomed to hearing the word 'no.'
"What’s the hold-up?" Brandon slurred slightly, glaring at Daniel. "Why’d the band stop playing?"
"Brandon, honey," Vanessa whined, wrapping herself around his arm, "this ridiculous manager just cut off our champagne and shut off the music! He claims my card didn't go through! Tell him to run your family’s corporate account right now so we can get back to our party."
Daniel held out the digital terminal. "If you wish to settle the three hundred thousand dollar balance now, Mr. Mitchell, along with the fifty thousand dollar fine for property damages, we can restore full services immediately."
Brandon’s eyes widened, the alcohol suddenly clearing from his brain. "Fifty thousand dollars for property damages? What property damages?"
"At four-fifteen this afternoon, your bride seized a high-pressure maintenance hose and sprayed down an invited guest on the historic terrace," Daniel stated clearly, loud enough for a nearby cluster of guests to overhear. "The untreated water soaked the eighteenth-century hand-carved limestone balustrade and saturated two antique French tapestries hanging inside the archway. The restoration costs are non-negotiable."
A heavy silence fell over the lawn.
"She was spraying my deadbeat sister!" Vanessa shouted, her poise shattering into raw malice. "She crashed my wedding! She was trespassing in a flea-market rag to humiliate us!"
"She was an invited guest carrying a personalized gold-embossed invitation," Daniel countered without missing a beat. "Furthermore, the victim has filed a formal complaint with estate security. We are currently reviewing surveillance footage to determine whether criminal charges will be forwarded to the Greenwich Police Department."
"Criminal charges?" Eleanor shrieked, clutching her pearls. "Are you insane? For spraying a little water on my own daughter? She should be thanking us for washing her dirty clothes!"
"Enough!"
A booming voice cut through the chaos like a whip.
Arthur Mitchell, patriarch of the Mitchell family and senior partner at Mitchell & Croft Investments, strode forward. His silver hair was neatly slicked back, and his steel-gray eyes held a cold, lethal intensity. Behind him walked several of his wealthiest business associates, looking visibly uncomfortable.
"What in God's name is happening here?" Arthur demanded, his eyes boring into Brandon. "Brandon, why are our guests drinking tap water out of plastic cups? Why is the sound off?"
"Dad... it's just a billing error," Brandon stammered, stepping back. "Vanessa's card bounced, and—"
"Her card bounced?" Arthur’s voice dropped an octave, dripping with contempt. "I gave you two hundred thousand dollars toward this wedding on the strict condition that her family covered the remaining costs and venue fees. Are you telling me the Sterlings couldn't even cover the balance?"
Richard Sterling swallowed hard, his bluster evaporating under Arthur Mitchell’s ferocious gaze. "Arthur, please, it's just a clerical mistake. We can wire the money first thing Monday morning..."
"There is no Monday morning in hospitality, Mr. Sterling," Daniel Brooks interrupted politely. "The estate policy is absolute. In fifteen minutes, if the balance and penalty fees are not resolved, we will be forced to ask all guests to vacate the premises."
Vanessa’s face twisted into sheer panic. "Vacate? You can't kick us out! This is my wedding day! Brandon, do something! Call the owner of this damn place! Call Carter Holdings!"
Arthur Mitchell froze. He snapped his head toward Daniel. "Did you say Carter Holdings owns this estate?"
May you like
"Yes, Mr. Mitchell," Daniel replied calmly. "The Rosewood Grand was acquired four years ago by Carter Holdings as part of their private luxury portfolio."
Arthur's face went completely pale. The arrogant sneer on his lips vanished, replaced by an expression of absolute horror.
