Chapter 7 - The Boardroom Ambush

By Wednesday morning, news of Bennett Crest Capital’s financial collapse had leaked to Crain's Chicago Business. Headlines screamed across social media: *PROMINENT LOOP DEVELOPER FACES MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR DEFAULT.*

At 10:00 AM, Lucas arrived at the neutral law offices of Kirkland & Ellis in downtown Chicago. He looked ten years older. His eyes were bloodshot, his stubble unkempt, his tie slightly crooked. He had spent the previous night in a cheap airport motel after three separate luxury hotels declined his credit cards.

He had called an emergency meeting with his primary investors, desperately hoping to convince them to provide an emergency rescue loan before the Friday deadline.

He pushed open the heavy oak doors of the central conference room, preparing his best sales pitch. "Gentlemen, thank you for coming on such short notice. What you've read in the press is nothing more than a temporary administrative dispute between—"

His voice died in his throat.

Sitting at the head of the twenty-seat boardroom table wasn't his syndicate of wealthy private investors.

It was me.

I wore an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, my hair pulled back in a sharp, elegant chignon. To my right sat Evelyn Vance; to my left were three senior partners from Chicago’s premier forensic accounting firms.

The other seats were occupied by the very men Lucas had planned to beg for money—except they weren't looking at him. They were looking at me with deferential respect.

"Take a seat, Lucas," I said, my voice steady, quiet, and completely devoid of warmth.

Lucas stepped forward, his fists clenching at his sides. "What is this? Where are the mezzanine partners?"

"Apex Meridian bought out their debt positions at seven o'clock this morning at a thirty percent discount," Evelyn announced, sliding a transaction summary across the table. "They were eager to exit a sinking ship. Mrs. Bennett is now your sole creditor. She owns your loans, your mortgages, your development permits, and your personal guarantees."

Lucas stared at me, his chest heaving. "Sophia... why are you doing this? We're married! Everything I built was for us!"

A soft, humorless laugh escaped my lips.

"For us?" I asked, tilting my head. "Is that why you spent two hundred and forty thousand dollars on an offshore account for Chloe Vance’s sister? Is that why you told me to get on my hands and knees and eat cake off the floor of a public restaurant like a dog?"

The investors around the table shifted uncomfortably, exchanging disgusted glances. Arrogance in business was tolerated; crude, public humiliation of the very woman holding the purse strings was unadulterated stupidity.

"I was drunk, Sophia! It was a joke!" Lucas pleaded, taking a step closer, his eyes wide with desperation. "I'll apologize! I'll take an ad out in the Tribune! I'll do whatever you want! Just release the hold on the operating accounts. If the River North project goes under, we both lose everything!"

I leaned forward, resting my elbows on the table and folding my hands.

"You lose everything, Lucas," I corrected him gently. "I don't. The project has already been transferred to a clean restructuring vehicle under Apex Meridian. Construction resumes on Monday morning under new management. You, however, are relieved of your duties as Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately."

"You can't fire me from my own company!" he bellowed.

"Page ninety-two of the operating agreement," Evelyn chimed in cheerfully. "Removal for cause: fiduciary fraud, commingling of personal and corporate capital, and moral turpitude. We have sixty-four separate instances of corporate embezzlement documented over the last eighteen months. You’re not just fired, Lucas. If you don't sign the voluntary forfeiture papers today, we hand this binder over to the United States Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois."

May you like

Lucas collapsed into the nearest leather chair, the fight draining out of him, leaving behind nothing but cold, paralyzing terror.
