Chapter 5 - The Cracks in the Facade

By 1:00 PM, the atmosphere inside Bennett Crest Capital had turned toxic.
Lucas paced the length of his office like a caged predator, screaming into his phone. "I don't give a damn about the covenant! Call the managing director at Apex! I want his name, I want his office address, and I want an emergency meeting before close of business!"
"Mr. Bennett..." his chief operating officer, David Miller, stood trembling by the doorway, holding a stack of invoices. "The general contractor at the Lofts just called. They’re locking the gates. The steel delivery was turned back at the bridge because the credit card on file was declined."
"Tell them they'll get paid on Monday!" Lucas barked, his face flushed purple.
"They won't accept that," David said, swallowing hard. "They said unless they see cleared funds in their account by four o'clock, they're filing a mechanic's lien against the entire block. And Lucas... where is Sophia? Normally she handles the liquidity buffers."
Lucas froze. A sudden, ugly realization flickered across his eyes.
Sophia.
Whenever a crisis had arisen over the past five years, Sophia was the one who worked through the night, reorganizing capital, balancing lines of credit, smoothing over panicked lenders. Lucas had always brushed it off as "secretarial math," convincing himself that her role was trivial compared to his visionary leadership.
He picked up his personal cell and dialed her again. Straight to voicemail.
*Hi, you've reached Sophia. Please leave a message.*
"Sophia, pick up the phone!" he hissed into the speaker. "Where the hell are you? Some clerical screw-up has frozen the corporate accounts. I need you to log into the master portal and clear the collateral flag. Stop playing these pathetic childish games and answer me!"
He terminated the call and rubbed his temples, his breath coming in shallow gasps.
A soft knock came at his office door. Chloe stepped inside, holding a flat, velvet-lined box from Cartier.
"Lucas, baby," she purred, unaware of the impending catastrophe. "You promised we'd celebrate my birthday early today. You said we were going to get the diamond tennis bracelet before lunch."
Lucas looked at her, his nerves fraying. "Not now, Chloe. We have a minor operational hold-up."
"A hold-up?" Chloe's voice lost some of its sweetness. "Lucas, the store associate is waiting on the phone. They ran your Amex Centurion and it came back code 05. Declined. It was so humiliating!"
"I said not now!" Lucas roared, slamming his fist onto his desk.
Chloe gasped, stepping back, her eyes wide with shock. She had never seen him unpolished, never seen the carefully curated illusion of infinite wealth fracture.
Before he could apologize, the front double doors of the office swung open. Two men in dark suits, accompanied by a process server with a certified folder, walked briskly through the lobby, brushing past the receptionist.
"Lucas Bennett?" the lead process server called out, stepping straight into the corner office.
"Who the hell authorized you to enter my private office?" Lucas snarled.
The man didn't blink. He slapped a heavy, court-stamped packet directly onto Lucas’s desk. "You’ve been formally served with an emergency notice of mortgage default and asset seizure on behalf of Apex Meridian LLC. You have seventy-two hours to cure fifteen million dollars in delinquent obligations, or foreclosure proceedings will commence immediately."
Lucas stared at the papers, his heart pounding like a bass drum against his ribs.
At the bottom of the formal demand letter, in bold, immaculate print, was the name of Apex Meridian’s sole managing director:
**Sophia Bennett, Managing Partner.**
Lucas’s vision blurred. The room seemed to tilt beneath his feet.
May you like
"Sophia...?" he whispered, his voice cracking. "No. That’s... that’s impossible."
