Chapter 6 - Public Declines

The realization hit Lucas like a physical blow, knocking the air from his lungs.

Sophia wasn't his quiet, obedient trophy wife who sat patiently in the background while he built his empire. She wasn't an accessory he could humiliate in public to stroke his fragile ego.

She was his bank.

"Lucas?" Chloe's voice came from the doorway, sharp and suspicious. "What is that? What does it mean, asset seizure?"

"Get out," Lucas muttered, his eyes glued to my signature on the legal document.

"Excuse me?" Chloe snapped, crossing her arms. "I just stood there while your credit card was rejected in front of half the Magnificent Mile, and now you’re shouting at me? What’s going on with your money?"

"I said GET OUT!" he screamed, sweeping his arm across the desk, sending his designer pen set, coffee cup, and balance sheets crashing onto the floor.

Chloe flinched, looked at the papers scattered across the Persian rug, and saw the word *FORECLOSURE* stamped in bold red ink. Without another word, she turned on her designer heels, grabbed her Birkin bag—which had been purchased with a company card that would soon be audited—and walked out of the office, never to return.

Lucas barely noticed her departure. He grabbed his coat, ignored the stunned stares of his remaining staff, and bolted for the elevator.

He needed to see her. He needed to look into her eyes and understand what kind of sick trick she was playing. He convinced himself that this was merely an elaborate power play, an attempt to punish him for the restaurant incident. If he could just get her face-to-face, he could charm her, gaslight her, or bully her into submission as he had always done.

He drove like a madman back to Winnetka, running yellow lights, his knuckles white against the steering wheel.

When he arrived at the gated entrance of our estate, he punched his six-digit security code into the keypad.

A harsh, red light flashed. *ACCESS DENIED.*

Lucas blinked, cursing loudly. He punched the numbers again, harder this time. *ACCESS DENIED.*

He hit the intercom button connected to the estate’s security system. "Open the gate!" he yelled.

A calm, unfamiliar voice answered through the speaker. "Mr. Bennett. Pursuant to a preliminary preservation order issued this afternoon by the Cook County Sheriff's Department and Apex Meridian, access to this property is restricted pending formal inventory. You are permitted to retrieve essential clothing accompanied by a sheriff’s deputy tomorrow morning at nine. Please vacate the premises."

"This is MY house!" Lucas screamed into the metal box, shaking the iron bars of the gate. "My name is on the title! You can’t lock me out of my own home!"

"The property is held under a cross-collateral trust, Mr. Bennett," the voice replied smoothly. "And the trust beneficiary has exercised immediate possession rights due to uncured material breach. Good day."

The intercom went dead.

Lucas stood alone in the cold driveway, the rain soaking through his bespoke suit, his reflection in the wet iron gate looking broken, hollow, and utterly defeated.
