Chapter 9 - House of Cards

The sight of the police uniforms sent an electric shock through the Grand Hermitage Ballroom. Guests parted immediately, giving the officers a wide, unobstructed path toward the center of the room.
Thomas Henderson pushed through the crowd, his face purple with rage. "What is the meaning of this? Officers, this is a private investor gala! Who authorized this?"
"I did, Mr. Henderson," Arthur Vance’s deep voice rumbled as the old patriarch stepped beside his daughter.
Thomas Henderson stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes darted to Arthur Vance, then to Claire, and finally landed on Daniel Mercer, who was hyperventilating beside a trembling Jessica.
"Chairman Vance," Henderson stammered, bowing his head slightly in deference. "I... I don't understand."
"Allow me to clarify," Arthur said coldly. "Henderson Automotive has been seeking a thirty-million-dollar credit facility from Vance Capital to fund your regional expansion across four states. We reviewed your application this morning."
A sliver of hope flickered in Henderson’s eyes, only to be crushed underfoot instantly.
"The application," Arthur continued, "listed Mr. Daniel Mercer as an equity partner whose personal assets and marital collateral were being used to guarantee eight million dollars of that debt. However, our forensic audit revealed that Mr. Mercer’s collateral consisted entirely of forged instruments, stolen identity documents belonging to my daughter, and an illegally encumbered primary residence owned solely by the Vance Family Trust."
Henderson looked like he was about to suffer a stroke. He turned toward Daniel, his fists trembling with fury. "You did what?"
"Thomas, listen to me," Daniel babbled, tears now streaming down his face, smearing his sweat-stained collar. "It’s a misunderstanding! Claire is my wife! She's just mad because of a little fight we had! It's our money!"
"It is not your money, Mr. Mercer," the lead detective announced, stepping forward and pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from his utility belt. "Daniel Mercer, you are under arrest for grand larceny, bank fraud, and identity theft under Tennessee State Statute 39-14."
"No!" Daniel shrieked, backing away into a tower of champagne glasses. The crystal clattered violently, two glasses tumbling to the floor and shattering. "You can't arrest me! I didn't do anything! Claire, tell them! Tell them to stop!"
Claire didn't blink. She took a slow sip of her sparkling water, watching Daniel writhe in the trap he had spent years digging for himself.
"And Jessica Collins," the detective continued, turning toward the terrified mistress. "You are being detained as an accessory to identity theft and receiving stolen property exceeding two hundred and fifty thousand dollars."
"Me?" Jessica screamed, backing into Daniel. "No! I didn't know anything! Daniel told me he was a millionaire! He told me his wife was a nobody! He bought me those things! Take him, not me!"
"You ungrateful bitch!" Daniel snarled, lunging toward Jessica. "You picked out the dress! You demanded the penthouse downtown! You told me to kick Claire out so we could move in together!"
"Step back!" two officers shouted, grabbing Daniel by the arms and twisting them ruthlessly behind his back.
The click of the steel handcuffs locking around Daniel Mercer’s wrists sounded like thunder in the cavernous ballroom. The gathered elites—the very people Daniel had spent five years desperately trying to impress—watched in cold silence, pulling out their phones to capture the spectacle.
Jessica sobbed hysterically as another female officer gripped her wrists, snapping cuffs around her delicate, diamond-clad forearms.
Thomas Henderson stepped up to Daniel, his face inches from his disgraced former partner. "You miserable parasite. You destroyed my company's relationship with Vance Capital. You are stripped of your title, your shares are forfeited under the morality clause of your contract, and my attorneys will sue you for every dime you will ever make for the rest of your pathetic life."
"Thomas, please!" Daniel sobbed as the officers dragged him backward across the polished marble. "Claire! Claire, please! I'm Cooper's father! You can't do this to me!"
Claire set her crystal flute down on a passing waiter’s tray. She stepped forward, her silver gown shimmering under the lights, until she stood two feet from Daniel.
She leaned in, her voice low, measured, and absolute.
"When you shoved my face into that cake, Daniel, you told me to relax because it was just a joke," Claire whispered into his ear. "Do you find this funny?"
Daniel could only stare at her, his lips trembling, completely broken.

"Get them out of my sight," Arthur Vance ordered.
The police dragged Daniel and Jessica toward the grand exit, their frantic screams echoing down the hall until the heavy oak doors slammed shut behind them.
