Chapter 8 - The Cost of Greed

The applause dwindled as Claire concluded her brief address, stepping away from the gilded dais alongside her father. Immediately, a swarm of state officials, Fortune 500 executives, and private wealth managers surged toward the VIP pavilion, hoping to exchange a single sentence with the woman holding the purse strings to billions.

Daniel moved like an automaton, his body propelled by pure, primal panic.

"Daniel, wait!" Jessica panicked, scuttling after him in her emerald gown, struggling to balance on her high heels over the slick marble. "What are you doing? Where are you going?"

"I have to talk to her," Daniel muttered, his hands shaking violently as he shoved through the edges of the crowd. "She's my wife. Do you understand? She's my wife! She took Cooper and left, but we aren't divorced! She can't just... she can't do this!"

In Daniel's twisted mind, a desperate sliver of rationalization had begun to sprout. If Claire was a trillionaire’s daughter, then legally, half of everything she had was his. Tennessee was an equitable distribution state. They had been married for five years. He was the father of her child. If he could just corner her, play on her past affection, or remind her of Cooper, he could smooth this over. He could spin the cake incident as a drunken mistake. He could apologize, grovel, do whatever it took. He just needed five minutes alone with her.

"Claire!" Daniel called out, pushing past the CEO of a regional healthcare network. "Claire!"

The crowd parted slightly, irritated by the commotion.

Claire was standing by a champagne fountain, flanked by two towering men in charcoal suits with Vance Security pins on their lapels. Marcus, the stone-faced head of Vance legal whom Daniel had never met, stood immediately to her left holding an embossed leather folder.

Daniel broke through the perimeter of guests, his face flushed, tie slightly askew. "Claire! Honey, thank God! What is all this?"

The surrounding executives fell silent, glancing between the sweating car dealer and the pristine heiress.

Claire did not flinch. She slowly turned, holding a crystal flute of sparkling water, and looked at Daniel as though he were a smear of grease on an otherwise clean countertop.

"Can I help you, Mr. Mercer?" she asked coolly.

The icy formal address struck Daniel like a slap across the face. Behind him, Jessica caught up, panting slightly, clutching her designer clutch that had been charged directly to Claire’s credit card.

"Claire, stop playing games," Daniel pleaded, dropping his voice to a frantic whisper as he reached toward her arm. "Look, about the birthday party... it was just a joke! You know how my mom gets, and I had too much to drink. Jess was just filming for fun! We were looking for you! I've been worried sick about Cooper—"

"Take one more step toward Miss Vance," a low, thunderous voice interrupted, "and you will leave this room in a stretcher."

One of the security officers stepped into Daniel's path, a wall of pure muscle and tailored wool. Daniel recoiled, his face burning with humiliation.

"Do you know who I am?" Daniel blustered, attempting to recover an ounce of his former swagger in front of the watching elites. "I am her husband! That's my wife! Tell your goons to back off, Claire! We need to talk in private. Right now."

Jessica stepped up beside Daniel, her panic giving way to defensive vitriol. "Claire, you can't just run away with Daniel's son and put on this ridiculous show! You think because you rented some fancy dress and hired these guards you can embarrass us? Daniel is a partner at Henderson Automotive! My family has deep roots in this city!"

Claire looked at Jessica, her gaze drifting down to the fourteen-thousand-dollar emerald gown, then to the diamond choker hugging her throat.

"You wear my money well, Jessica," Claire said softly, her voice carrying clear as a bell across the circle of eavesdropping elites.

Jessica froze. "What?"

Marcus stepped forward, opening the leather folio. "On Tuesday at 2:14 PM, a platinum corporate card registered under the name Claire Mercer—social security ending in 4109—was charged fourteen thousand two hundred dollars at the Belle Meade Haute Couture boutique. At 4:30 PM, the same card was charged eight thousand five hundred dollars at Tiffany & Co. for an eighteen-karat white gold choker."

The whispers among the gathered guests erupted instantly into shocked murmurs. High-society women gasped behind their manicured hands, glaring at Jessica with absolute disgust.

"Furthermore," Marcus continued, pulling out a sheaf of certified legal filings, "between June of last year and yesterday morning, sixty-two unauthorized charges totaling over three hundred and eighty thousand dollars were billed across five fraudulent credit lines opened using Miss Vance’s stolen credentials. The beneficiary of the downtown luxury penthouse lease funded by these lines was identified as Miss Jessica Collins."

Jessica’s face drained of every drop of color. She looked around in horror as the city's most prominent socialites backed away from her as if she were carrying the plague.

"That's... that's a lie!" Jessica stammered, clutching her neck. "Daniel gave me those cards! He said it was company money!"

"Daniel Mercer," Claire spoke, her voice ringing with the absolute finality of an iron door slamming shut, "has never earned more than eighty thousand dollars a year in legitimate draw. The house you sleep in was purchased with my personal cash before we married. The cars you drive were leased through my private family trust. And the ground you are standing on right now belongs to Vance Global Holdings."

"Claire, please," Daniel begged, tears of terror prickling his eyes as he saw his entire life disintegrating in front of hundreds of influential people. "Think of Cooper! Cooper needs his father!"

"You didn't care about Cooper when you pushed my face into his fifth birthday cake while your mother laughed and your mistress filmed his tears," Claire said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp whisper that cut straight to his bone. "You didn't care about Cooper when you forged my signature to put our home up as collateral for your predatory bank loans. Cooper is safe. He is happy. And he will never see your face again."

May you like

Claire nodded once to Marcus.

Marcus snapped his fingers. Through the double doors of the ballroom, four uniformed officers from the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department entered, flanked by two special agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
