Chapter 6 - Wolves in Silk

The Grand Hermitage Ballroom was a masterpiece of architectural opulence.

Soaring marble columns rose toward five-story vaulted ceilings adorned with crystal chandeliers that cast cascading prisms of golden light across six hundred of the nation's wealthiest elites. Governors, international tech founders, hedge fund magnates, and European nobility mingled over vintage champagne while a forty-piece string orchestra played softly in the mezzanine.

Daniel Mercer felt like an emperor stepping into his palace.

Holding Jessica tightly on his arm, he marched across the polished marble floor, his eyes darting frantically across the room, searching for anyone holding power.

"Look at this place," Jessica whispered, her eyes wide with unbridled greed. "Daniel, that's Senator Davenport over there! And beside him is the CEO of Southern Energy!"

"Stay cool, Jess," Daniel whispered out of the corner of his mouth, trying to project casual confidence. "Act like we belong here. Remember, tonight we aren't just car dealers. We are future partners of Vance Capital."

Daniel spotted Thomas Henderson, the senior founding partner of Henderson Automotive, standing near the VIP velvet ropes with several high-ranking banking executives.

Straightening his tie, Daniel swaggered over, flashing his brightest salesman smile.

"Thomas! Fantastic evening, isn't it?" Daniel boomed, extending a hand.

Thomas Henderson turned, his expression tightening into something cold and unrecognizable. He didn't take Daniel's hand.

"Daniel," Thomas said flatly. "I see you made it."

"Wouldn't miss the biggest night in Tennessee history," Daniel said smoothly, completely missing the chill in the older man’s demeanor. "I wanted to introduce you to Jessica Collins, my partner. We’re eager to speak with the Vance executive acquisitions team about finalizing the franchise buyout."

Thomas glanced at Jessica, then back at Daniel, a look of profound disgust flickering across his features.

"I wouldn't worry about finalizing anything tonight, Mercer," Thomas muttered quietly. "In fact, if I were you, I'd enjoy the free champagne while you still can."

Before Daniel could process the warning, the thunderous chime of a silver bell resonated through the ballroom sound system.

The orchestra silenced instantly. The chatter among the hundreds of billionaire guests ceased, replaced by a reverent hush as all eyes turned toward the grand twin marble staircases at the center of the hall.

The master of ceremonies stepped to the central gilded podium.

"Distinguished guests, honored leaders, and friends," the announcer's voice echoed through the vast hall. "Please welcome the Chairman and Founder of Vance Global Holdings, Mr. Arthur Vance."

Applause erupted across the room—respectful, deafening, and absolute.

At the top of the grand staircase, an imposing figure stepped into the light. Arthur Vance was seventy years old, with sharp silver hair, an impeccably tailored midnight-blue bespoke tuxedo, and an aura of absolute command that commanded the room effortlessly.

Daniel gasped, dropping his champagne glass onto the carpeted runner.

"What... what is this?" Daniel stammered, his face draining of color. "That... that's impossible."

"What's wrong, Daniel?" Jessica asked, looking at him in confusion. "That’s Arthur Vance. He’s the trillionaire."

"No," Daniel whispered, his voice trembling violently as cold sweat broke out across his forehead. "That's... that's Claire's father. That's the old man with the tomato garden."

Before Jessica could reply, the announcer spoke again, his voice carrying an electric resonance that froze the breath in Daniel’s throat.

"And tonight, Chairman Vance is proud to formally introduce the newly appointed Chief Executive Officer of Vance Capital and majority shareholder of Vance Global Holdings..."

The announcer paused as a second figure stepped out onto the marble landing beside Arthur Vance.

The breath was sucked out of the room.

A woman descended the staircase in a breathtaking gown of hand-embroidered silver silk that caught the light like liquid starlight. Her hair was swept up in an elegant chignon, her poise regal, unyielding, and majestic. Around her wrist blazed the unmistakable platinum-and-diamond Vance dynasty crest.

"Please welcome," the announcer proclaimed, "Miss Claire Vance."

Daniel felt his knees buckle. Beside him, Jessica’s wine glass slipped from her fingers, shattering violently across the marble floor.
