Chapter 10 - An Unbroken Vow

By 3:00 AM, the penthouse had transformed into an impenetrable war room. Heavy steel shutters had slid down over the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, sealing us inside a titanium fortress. Tactical teams patrolled every stairwell, while monitors displayed infrared perimeter feeds of the entire block.

In the master study, Gabriel stood behind an enormous desk of reclaimed teak. Across from him sat his top three lieutenants, including Marco, reviewing digital floor plans and weapon manifests.

I walked into the study, holding a legal document Marco had handed me ten minutes earlier.

Gabriel looked up, dismissing his men with a curt wave of his hand. The lieutenants filed out quietly, closing the soundproof double doors behind them.

"What is this, Gabriel?" I asked, placing the document on his desk.

"It’s an irrevocable trust and transfer of ownership," Gabriel said calmly. "Fifty-one percent of Vance Holdings, all residential properties in London and Zurich, and four hundred million in diversified liquid assets. Divided equally among Leo, Julian, and Mateo. With you appointed as the sole executor until they turn twenty-five."

I stared at him, bewildered. "Why are you giving me this?"

"Because if I don't survive the next forty-eight hours, nobody can challenge their inheritance," he said plainly, as if discussing the weather. "The board cannot freeze the accounts. The Vale family cannot touch the trust. You can take them to Switzerland, change your names, and live in absolute peace for the rest of your lives."

"Gabriel..."

He walked around the desk, stopping right in front of me. For the first time, I saw an exhaustion in his eyes that went deeper than bone.

"I failed you five years ago, Claire," he said, his voice dropping to a low, raw cadence. "I let my pride, my paranoia, and a treacherous woman strip away the only life that ever brought me peace. If I die tomorrow, let this be the one thing I did right for you and our boys."

Tears blurred my vision. "I don't want your money, Gabriel! I never wanted your empire!"

"I know," he whispered, lifting both hands to cup my face. His thumbs gently wiped away the tears spilling over my eyelashes. "That’s why you're the only person I trust with it."

My heart hammered against my ribs as his face drew closer. The scent of him—sandalwood, rain, and danger—pulled me backward through time, to the days when we were young, reckless, and fiercely in love before the mafia crown crushed his soul.

When his lips touched mine, the world outside ceased to exist.

The kiss was desperate, tasting of old grief, fierce possessiveness, and an unspoken apology five years in the making. I gripped the lapels of his shirt, hating myself for how desperately my body still responded to him, how safe I felt in the arms of the most dangerous man in the city.

When he finally pulled back, resting his forehead against mine, both of our breaths were coming in ragged gasps.

"Stay with me tonight," he whispered against my lips. "Just for tonight. Let me protect you."

Before I could answer, the boy’s bedroom door down the hall clicked open.
