Chapter 2 - The Sealed Grand Ballroom

The silence in the grand ballroom was suffocating. Beneath the glittering crystal chandeliers of the St. Regis, New York’s elite stood frozen, clutching champagne flutes as armed men in tailored charcoal suits sealed every brass-hinged exit. Councilmen, district attorneys, hedge fund titans—men who dictated the pulse of Wall Street—looked around in sheer panic. But nobody dared move.

Gabriel Vance ruled this city not through political office, but through absolute, unyielding dominion. And right now, his world had narrowed down to three five-year-old boys clinging to my dress.

"Gabriel, be reasonable!" Serena’s voice shrilled through the cavernous space. Her manicured hand gripped his lapel, knuckles white against the velvet fabric of his tuxedo. "Everyone is watching! Look at her—she planned this! She’s trying to destroy your reputation right before the harbor expansion deal!"

Gabriel didn't look at her. His gaze remained locked on Leo, who had boldly taken a half-step in front of his brothers, puffing out his small chest with a courage that was painfully familiar.

"Did I tell you to speak, Serena?" Gabriel’s voice was barely louder than a whisper, yet it cut through the room like a cold steel blade.

Serena recoiled as if struck.

Slowly, Gabriel stepped forward. Every guard in the room stiffened, their hands resting near their holsters. The collective intake of breath from two hundred socialites sounded like a dry wind. Gabriel stopped three feet from where I stood, his towering six-foot-three frame casting a long shadow over us. Up close, I could see the faint tremor in his jaw, the raw turbulence in eyes that had once looked at me with tenderness before cruelty and deceit had ripped us apart.

"Five years, Claire," he murmured, his voice thick with an emotion he couldn't master. "Five years you let me believe you walked away with another man's money. Five years you hid my flesh and blood in the dark."

"I didn't hide them in the dark, Gabriel," I replied, forcing my voice to remain steady despite the violent pounding of my pulse. "I brought them into the light. Far away from your blood money, your executions, and the poisoned viper you brought into our bed."

A collective gasp echoed across the floor.

Serena surged forward, her diamond earrings swinging wildly. "How dare you! Gabriel, call security and throw this lunatic out! She’s slandering us—"

"Marco." Gabriel didn't turn around.

From the shadows near the mezzanine, his right-hand man, Marco Rossi, materialized instantly. "Boss."

"Clear the VIP salon on the east wing," Gabriel commanded, his eyes never leaving mine. "Summon Dr. Hayes. Tell him he has ten minutes to bring rapid DNA test kits, or I'll revoke his hospital's funding by midnight."

"Right away, boss."

"No!" Serena cried, panic cracking her polished veneer. "A DNA test? Gabriel, you're insulting yourself! You're lending credibility to an extortionist!"

Gabriel turned his head, his profile carved from stone. "If she is an extortionist, Serena, she will pay with her life. But if those boys are mine... God help anyone who stood between me and my sons."
