Chapter 11 - The Shadow Returns

"Mommy?"

Leo’s small voice carried down the marble corridor. He was rubbing his eyes, wearing his oversized navy pajamas, clutching a small stuffed dinosaur I had packed in my purse.

Gabriel stepped back instantly, smoothing his shirt, his expression softening as he looked at our eldest son.

"Hey, buddy," I said, clearing my throat and hurrying over to kneel beside Leo. "What’s wrong? Bad dream?"

"The lights made a funny click," Leo mumbled, looking past me at Gabriel. "And Julian says there are men with big guns in the kitchen."

Gabriel knelt down beside us, bringing himself to eye level with Leo. The sheer size difference was striking, yet their faces were identical mirrors across three decades.

"Those men work for me, Leo," Gabriel said gently, using a tone that no business partner or rival had ever heard. "They're here to make sure no monsters get into this building. You’re completely safe."

Leo studied him with his serious gray-green eyes. "Are you really our dad?"

Gabriel swallowed hard, an emotional crack appearing in his hardened facade. "Yes, Leo. I am your dad. And I'm sorry it took me so long to find you."

Leo tilted his head, considering this. "Mommy says dads are supposed to teach you how to build treehouses."

A rare, genuine smile touched Gabriel’s lips. "I’ll build you three treehouses. One for each of you."

Suddenly, the lights overhead flickered violently.

A deep, resonant thud echoed through the foundation of the skyscraper, rattling the heavy crystal chandeliers. The titanium blast shutters groaned against their frames.

*BZZZZ.*

The emergency red backup lights snapped on, bathing the penthouse in a crimson glow.

Gabriel sprang to his feet, instantly placing his body between us and the main hallway. "Marco!"

Marco slammed through the study doors, his assault rifle raised, a bloody gash across his temple. "Boss! They breached the lower parking garage! It wasn't the Morettis alone—the Vale syndicate provided the building's master override codes!"

"Lock down the safe room on level three!" Gabriel barked, drawing a matte-black pistol from beneath his waistband. "Claire, take the boys into the vault behind the master closet! Now!"

I scooped Leo up in my arms and sprinted toward the boys' room to grab Julian and Mateo. Panic surged through my veins like ice water.

Then, my phone buzzed violently in my dress pocket.

It was a notification from an unknown, encrypted number.

I pulled it out with shaking hands as Julian and Mateo scrambled into my arms, terrified by the wailing alarms.

The message contained a single photograph.

My breath stopped. The world around me turned into absolute void.

The photograph showed the three boys sleeping in their beds—taken from *inside* the penthouse guest room, barely fifteen minutes ago, while Gabriel and I were talking in the study.

Beneath the photograph, a text message read:

*“Did you really think the viper was Serena, Claire? Look closer at who held the door open for you tonight. Check the closet before you step inside.”*

I froze in the doorway of the master bedroom, my eyes darting toward the walk-in vault, where the heavy steel door stood slightly ajar in the shadows.
