Chapter 10 - The Master Key

"The Elm Street penthouse," Eleanor said, her voice steady and deliberate, "was purchased through the Arthur Vance Living Trust four years ago. It was intended to be an inheritance property."

Tiffany took a half-step back, her breath catching in her throat. "What do you mean, an inheritance property? Julian told me he held the deed!"

Julian looked down at the porch steps, unable to meet his bride's gaze. "I... I told you my family owned it, Tiffany. I never said the deed was in my name."

"You lied to me?!" Tiffany shrieked, whirling on Julian with complete fury, shoving him backward against the porch railing. "You told me you were worth millions! You told me your family had vast real estate portfolios! You let me plan a six-figure wedding based on money that wasn't even yours?!"

"You didn't love him, did you?" Eleanor interrupted, her voice cutting through the screaming match like an icy blast of wind.

Tiffany stopped, her chest heaving, staring at Eleanor through the glass.

"You didn't care about Julian," Eleanor continued, her eyes piercing through the younger woman’s crumbling facade. "You and your father were drowning in debt. Your father’s developments went bust two years ago. You targeted my son because you thought Arthur left behind an endless fortune, and you thought an old, lonely widow would be easy to manipulate."

"That's not true—" Tiffany stammered, but her voice lacked conviction.

"Robert Sterling pulled the public tax records this morning," Eleanor said. "Your father has three separate default notices against his primary residence. You thought Julian was your golden parachute. You thought by tying yourself to this family, I would bail out your father’s failing empire just to save face."

Eleanor looked down at her hands, taking a slow breath.

"Well, you miscalculated. I do not care about face. And I will not spend a single cent of Arthur’s hard-earned legacy to rescue a family of grifters."

Robert Sterling stepped up behind Eleanor, holding a formal white legal document against the glass.

"This is an immediate Notice to Vacate," Robert stated firmly. "The access codes to the Elm Street residence were changed at eight o'clock this morning. All personal property belonging to Mr. Julian Vance has been packed into professional storage units, the keys to which will be surrendered upon his signature. Miss Miller, you have no legal tenancy, no marital claim to trust assets, and if you step foot on that property, you will be arrested for felony burglary."

Tiffany let out a ragged, broken cry. She looked at Julian, her face contorted with pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You pathetic little boy," she spat, venom dripping from every syllable. "You have nothing. You *are* nothing."

She spun around, marched down the driveway, and climbed into her battered crossover vehicle, slamming the door so hard the frame rattled. She backed out into the street with tires squealing and vanished down the suburban avenue, leaving Julian standing entirely alone in the damp morning air.

Julian turned back toward the front door, his hands trembling violently.

"Mom," he whispered, tears streaming freely down his hollow cheeks. "Please. I have nowhere to go."

Eleanor looked at the son she had loved more than her own life. Her heart ached with a deep, visceral pain, but she did not unlock the door.

"You have a job, Julian," Eleanor said quietly. "And you have two working hands. It is time you learned what a man does when he has to pay for his own mistakes."

May you like

She closed the heavy oak door and turned the deadbolt with a solid, echoing thud.
