Chapter 6 - Julian’s Awakening

The transition was violent.

The soft, romantic amber chandeliers clicked off, plunging the ballroom into a split second of darkness before the harsh, fluorescent maintenance floodlights buzzed to life. The magical, fairy-tale illusion of the million-dollar wedding evaporated in an instant. The room suddenly looked like what it actually was: a hollow concrete hall filled with half-eaten appetizers, melting ice sculptures, and dirty napkins.

"No! NO!" Tiffany screamed, clutching her head in her hands, her veil ripping loose from her pins and dangling down her back. "Turn them off! Turn the lights off! Guests, please! Nobody leave! This is just a misunderstanding!"

Several guests at the perimeter were already grabbing their coats, whispering furiously behind their programs as they headed toward the exits. People were pulling out their smartphones, discreetly—and not so discreetly—recording the meltdown occurring on the stage.

Julian stood frozen in the middle of it all, staring at his new father-in-law. Donald was frantically shouting into his cell phone, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.

"I don't give a damn what the ledger says, liquidate the mutual funds! What do you mean the account is locked by the state?!" Donald was roaring into the receiver, sweat dripping from his chin onto his tuxedo shirt. "I need ninety thousand dollars wired to the Palisades Estate right now or I am ruined!"

Julian blinked, the fog finally beginning to clear from his brain.

"You don't have it," Julian said, his voice cutting through the noise.

Donald dropped the phone slightly, glaring at Julian. "Shut up, kid. I'm handling business."

"You don't have any money at all," Julian repeated, louder this time. He stepped toward Tiffany, his eyes wide with a horrifying revelation. "The house in the Hamptons. The private equity firm. The trust fund you talked about every single time we went out to dinner... none of it exists, does it?"

Tiffany whirled on him, her eyes wild, her face twisted with a level of rage Julian had never seen before. "Don't you dare talk to my father like that! This is your mother’s fault! That dried-up old witch set this up to humiliate me! She knew Donald’s assets were temporarily illiquid!"

"My mother paid for your six-thousand-dollar dress!" Julian yelled, the dam finally breaking inside him. "She paid for the flowers! She paid the twenty-thousand-dollar deposit on the caterer! She gave you everything you asked for until you demanded a fifteen-thousand-dollar wine collection that wasn't even on the menu!"

"It was my wedding day!" Tiffany shrieked, lunging toward him, her manicured fingers curling into claws before her mother caught her by the arms. "A real man would have protected his wife! A real man wouldn't let his pathetic, miserable mother dictate his life! You’re a coward, Julian! You’ve always been a coward!"

Julian stared at her.

He looked at the woman he had married three hours ago in front of God and family. He saw the cold, vicious sneer on her mouth, the desperate greed glittering in her eyes, and the complete lack of remorse for what she had done to the woman who had raised him alone after his father died.

*“You’re ruining the atmosphere,”* Tiffany had said, right after slapping Eleanor across the face.

And Julian had stood there. He had said her name—*“Tiffany...”*—like a meek schoolboy asking for permission to speak.

"My God," Julian whispered, clutching his chest as if the air had been sucked out of his lungs. "What did I just do?"
