Chapter 4 - The Perfect Wife's Perfect Lie

Victoria had spent years cultivating an image of perfection.
She chaired charity galas, donated to children's hospitals, and appeared in glossy magazine photographs beside Daniel. Her social media accounts showed a loving mother arranging elaborate birthday parties and taking Lily to exclusive events.
To the outside world, she was generous, elegant, and devoted.
Now she used that image as a weapon.
Her attorney sent a statement to several influential friends claiming that Daniel had suffered a breakdown after returning from a stressful business trip. According to the statement, Grace had encouraged Lily to make false allegations because she feared losing her job.
The rumor spread quickly.
Daniel's company received calls from investors asking whether the allegations would affect his leadership.
He refused to discuss private family matters publicly.
Instead, he focused on evidence.
Lily met with an independent child psychologist, Dr. Natalie Brooks, who specialized in helping children communicate experiences of fear and distress. The interviews were conducted carefully, without leading questions or pressure to produce a particular answer.
Daniel was instructed to let the professional guide the process.
He followed every recommendation.
Meanwhile, his attorney obtained records showing that Victoria had canceled Lily's appointments and blocked Sofia's attempts to contact him.
The evidence was submitted through the proper legal channels.
Claire, however, continued to insist that Grace had fabricated the story.
She appeared at the mansion one afternoon carrying a gift bag.
“I brought Lily a doll,” she announced.
Daniel stopped her at the door.
“Lily isn't receiving visitors right now.”
Claire looked offended.
“I'm her aunt.”
“And I'm her father.”
“You can't keep the whole family away.”
“I can set boundaries while the situation is being assessed.”
Claire lowered her voice.
“Victoria is devastated. You know how sensitive she is.”
“Is Lily sensitive enough for you?”
Claire stiffened.
“What's that supposed to mean?”
“It means I want to know why you laughed while Grace was being humiliated.”
“I was trying to lighten the mood.”
“You kicked a mop bucket toward a woman who had just been slapped.”
Claire's cheeks reddened.
“She shouldn't have interfered.”
Daniel opened the door wider.
“Leave.”
For the first time, Claire had no clever response.
That evening, Grace found Lily drawing at the kitchen table.
The picture showed a small house with a yellow sun and three people standing outside: Lily, Daniel, and Grace.
“Who's this?” Grace asked, pointing to the third figure.
“You.”
“Why am I outside?”
Lily frowned.
“Because Mommy says you don't belong in our family.”
Grace knelt beside her.
“Families aren't only made of people who live in the same house, sweetheart. They're made of people who care about one another.”
Lily considered that.
“Then you're my family.”
Grace's eyes filled.
“I care about you very much.”
Daniel, standing in the doorway, heard every word.
He realized how deeply Grace had become a source of safety for Lily. That bond was not something he should exploit or use to replace a parent. It was something he needed to protect while helping his daughter regain a sense of security.
The following morning, the court ordered temporary safeguards while the investigation continued. Victoria was not permitted to be alone with Lily, and both parents were required to cooperate with the professional assessment.
Victoria reacted furiously.
“You're treating me like a criminal!”
Daniel kept his voice level.
“These are temporary protections. If the allegations are false, the evidence will show that.”
“And if they're true?”
He looked at her.
“Then we will have a much bigger problem.”
Victoria's eyes hardened.
That night, Daniel found a message on his phone from an unknown number.
You should ask Grace why she really stayed.
A second message arrived immediately afterward.
Your wife isn't the only person hiding something.
May you like
Daniel stared at the screen.
For the first time, he wondered whether Grace's loyalty to Lily had begun long before the night of the party.
