Chapter 3 - The Nanny Who Disappeared

The envelope was hidden inside Grace's old sewing box.

She brought it to Daniel the next morning. It was yellowed at the edges, with Sofia Alvarez's name written across the front.

Daniel opened it carefully.

Inside were copies of emails, several photographs, and a short handwritten note.

Mr. Harrington, if you're reading this, I failed to reach you in time. I tried to tell Mrs. Harrington that Lily needed protection, but she accused me of being unstable. She said she would ruin my reputation if I contacted you.

The note continued.

Sincerely, Sofia Alvarez.

Daniel studied the emails.

Some were messages Victoria had sent to Sofia, accusing her of undermining parental authority. Others showed Sofia requesting a meeting with Daniel's office.

Every request had been canceled by someone claiming to act on his behalf.

Daniel's executive assistant, Mark Ellis, confirmed that he had never seen the requests.

“Someone intercepted them,” Mark said.

“Who had access to my calendar and correspondence?”

“Your office, your personal assistant, and Mrs. Harrington's household account.”

Daniel's stomach tightened.

Victoria had controlled more than the household.

She had controlled the information reaching him.

One photograph showed Lily sitting alone on the back steps of the mansion, crying. Another showed Victoria standing in the doorway with her arms folded.

The photographs were not enough to establish every allegation, but they supported Sofia's account.

Daniel asked his attorney to contact Sofia through the information in the letter.

She agreed to meet them.

When Sofia arrived that afternoon, she looked nervous.

“I didn't want to leave Lily,” she explained. “But Mrs. Harrington threatened to accuse me of theft. I had two children of my own. I couldn't risk losing my ability to support them.”

“Did you see Victoria hurt Lily?” Daniel asked.

Sofia nodded.

“I saw her grab Lily hard enough to leave marks. I saw her lock Lily in the pantry after she cried during a family dinner. I reported what I witnessed to the appropriate people, but I didn't know whether anyone followed up.”

Daniel listened without interrupting.

“Why didn't you contact me directly?”

“I tried twice. Both times, I was told you were unavailable.”

Daniel looked at Mark, who sat beside him taking notes.

“We'll investigate that, too.”

Sofia then described Claire's role.

Victoria's sister had not directly cared for Lily, but she frequently encouraged Victoria's behavior. When Lily cried, Claire called her spoiled. When Grace intervened, Claire reminded her that she was an employee who could be replaced.

The cruelty had become a performance, and the audience had been trained to applaud.

Before Sofia left, she handed Daniel a small notebook.

“I wrote down dates because I was afraid I would forget details. I never wanted to use it against anyone. I only wanted someone to listen.”

Daniel thanked her.

That evening, he sat alone in his office and reviewed the notes.

He found references to a school meeting Victoria had canceled, a pediatric appointment she had missed, and several occasions when Lily had been left in the care of staff who had no authority to intervene.

Then he discovered a message from Victoria to Claire.

If Daniel ever finds out, tell him Grace is unstable. Nobody will believe a maid over his wife.

Daniel read it again.

The message had been sent six months earlier.

This was not a misunderstanding.

It was a plan.

When Victoria entered the office, she saw the papers spread across the desk.

“You've been digging through my private messages?”

“I've been reading evidence.”

“You have no idea how difficult it is to raise a child while your husband is always traveling.”

“Then you should have asked for help.”

“I did everything for Lily!”

Daniel looked up.

“Did you?”

Victoria's eyes filled, but he could not tell whether she was angry or afraid.

“You're going to take my daughter away from me.”

“I'm going to make sure she is safe.”

“You can't do that.”

“I can, and I will.”

Victoria left the room, slamming the door.

Minutes later, Daniel's attorney called.

The family court had received an emergency petition filed by Victoria's lawyer.

It claimed Daniel was emotionally unstable, had become aggressive toward his wife, and was allowing household employees to manipulate his daughter.

Victoria was trying to turn the story around.

And unless Daniel responded quickly with credible evidence, Lily could be placed in a situation where her safety depended on a court believing the truth.
