Chapter 2 - The Secret Behind the Bedroom Door

Daniel found Lily sitting on her bed with her knees pulled against her chest.

Her bedroom was enormous, filled with dolls, expensive toys, and shelves of books she rarely opened. A pink canopy hung above the bed. The curtains had been custom-made in Paris.

Yet the room felt strangely empty.

Daniel sat beside her.

“Sweetheart, you can tell me anything. You're not in trouble.”

Lily studied his face.

“Even if Mommy gets mad?”

“Even then.”

“What if she says I made it up?”

“I will listen to you. And I won't punish you for telling me how you feel.”

Lily hesitated.

Then she reached beneath her pillow and pulled out a small stuffed rabbit with one torn ear.

“Mommy says I'm a bad girl when you're gone.”

Daniel's throat tightened.

“She says you work so hard because I make trouble. She says if I tell you anything, you'll stop loving me because you'll think I'm a liar.”

Daniel closed his eyes for a moment.

He had spent years convincing himself that the private-school tuition, the vacations, the beautiful home, and the expensive gifts proved he was a good father.

He had never asked why Lily seemed less excited to see him after each business trip.

He had mistaken fear for shyness.

“What happens when she gets angry?” he asked gently.

Lily's fingers tightened around the rabbit.

“Sometimes she grabs me. Sometimes she makes me sit alone in the pantry. She says I have to learn not to embarrass her.”

Daniel kept his voice calm, although his hands were shaking.

“Has anyone else seen this?”

“Grace.”

“Anyone else?”

Lily nodded.

“Mrs. Alvarez.”

The name belonged to Sofia Alvarez, the family's longtime nanny, who had abruptly resigned four months earlier.

Daniel remembered the explanation Victoria had given him.

Sofia had supposedly become unreliable and had been dismissed for stealing jewelry.

“Did Mrs. Alvarez leave because of something that happened to you?”

Lily looked toward the door.

“Mommy said she would call the police if Sofia told you.”

Daniel stood.

He called the pediatrician again and requested a private appointment for Lily. He also contacted his attorney, who advised him to document everything and avoid making threats that might interfere with the investigation.

Downstairs, Victoria had already begun calling friends.

By the time Daniel returned to the living room, his phone was vibrating with messages.

Your wife says Grace attacked her.

Is Lily okay?

This sounds like a misunderstanding.

Victoria had wasted no time creating a different story.

She stood beside the fireplace, her arms folded.

“Are you planning to destroy this family over a child's fantasy?”

“I'm planning to find out why my daughter is afraid of you.”

“She isn't afraid of me.”

“Then you won't object to an independent professional speaking with her.”

Victoria's eyes narrowed.

“You are allowing a servant to dictate how we raise our child.”

“No. I'm listening to my daughter.”

Claire appeared at the foot of the stairs.

“Daniel, you're being manipulated. Grace has always been jealous of Victoria.”

Grace said nothing.

Daniel turned toward Claire.

“Did you know Lily was being punished when I traveled?”

Claire's expression flickered.

“I knew Victoria was strict.”

“That's not what I asked.”

Claire looked away.

“It's not my business.”

Daniel understood then that the problem was bigger than one person's cruelty.

The people around Victoria had learned to protect their comfort by pretending not to see.

He turned back to his wife.

“For now, you will not be alone with Lily. We will arrange appropriate professional support, and I expect everyone in this house to cooperate.”

Victoria stared at him as if he had slapped her.

“You cannot tell me how to behave in my own family.”

“I can protect my daughter.”

That evening, Daniel moved into the guest bedroom so Lily could sleep with a trusted caregiver nearby. Grace stayed until the child finally drifted off.

Before leaving, Grace placed the stuffed rabbit beside Lily's pillow.

Daniel waited for her in the hallway.

“I owe you an apology,” he said.

Grace looked surprised.

“For what, sir?”

“For not noticing. For creating a house where you were afraid to tell me the truth.”

Grace's eyes filled with tears.

“You were always kind to Lily. I thought if I kept her calm, things might improve.”

“Why did you stay?”

Grace took a slow breath.

“Because Lily kept asking me not to leave.”

Then she revealed something Daniel had not expected.

Three weeks before Sofia Alvarez resigned, she had given Grace a sealed envelope.

She had told Grace to open it only if Lily was ever in danger.

Grace had kept it hidden ever since.

And now, with Lily finally speaking, it was time to find out what Sofia had discovered.
