Chapter 10 - The Reckoning at the Gates

The heavy iron security gates of the Grand Savoy’s subterranean garage opened with a metallic shriek as Celeste punched her father's private security code into the console.

Outside, the cold night air hit them like a slap of ice.

The street was an absolute warzone of flashing red and blue lights. But instead of standard police cruisers, the perimeter was ringed by black tactical SUVs with tinted windows and unmarked government plates. News helicopters hovered low overhead, their brilliant spotlights cutting through the smoke and illuminating the front steps of the hotel.

Reporters, barred behind hastily erected barricades, were shouting over the roar of helicopter rotors. The live broadcast Mara had triggered had worked—the entire city knew something catastrophic was unfolding inside the Savoy.

Julian Bellamy was dragged out of the side entrance in zip-ties by federal marshals who had arrived ahead of the local precinct, his face bruised and his suit torn. Across the courtyard, Marcus Varrick was forced to his knees on the pavement, surrounded by agents with drawn weapons. The evidence Mara had transmitted across the global servers had bypassed local corruption entirely, landing directly on the desks of the Department of Justice.

Celeste watched her father being handcuffed, a single tear cutting down her cheek. She didn't run to him. She didn't scream for his lawyers. She simply turned her back, walking toward the emergency medical tents.

Adrian stood beside Mara, his chest heaving, his eyes haunted.

“It’s over,” Adrian breathed, looking down at the crowd of flashing cameras. “They're done. The Bellamy name, the Varrick empire… it’s all finished.”

“No, Adrian,” Mara said, watching the unmarked black SUVs parked at the edge of the police cordon. The men inside weren't moving; they were watching her through tinted glass, calculating, observing. “Your father and Marcus were just the contractors. The real architects haven't even been named yet.”

Adrian reached out, his hand gently touching her shoulder. “Mara… where will you go? After five years, you can finally come home.”

Mara looked down at her battered hands, the scars on her palms from the night she pulled sixty-four children out of the flames.

“Mercer House was my home, Adrian,” she said softly, her voice carrying a weight that broke his heart. “And it’s gone.”

She turned away, fading back into the swirling shadows of the alleyway before the press or the authorities could corner her.
