Chapter 6 - Bloodlines and Betrayals

The ballroom erupted into sheer pandemonium.

Celeste staggered back, her hands flying to her mouth. “No… that’s impossible! Daddy would never… he builds hospitals! He funds schools!”

“He funds tax write-offs, Celeste,” Mara countered, her voice cutting through the heiress’s denial. “Mercer House sat directly over the bedrock foundation required for the high-speed transit tunnel your father's consortium is currently building. If the shelter remained, the project would have been stalled for twenty years in state zoning courts. Your father and Julian didn't just want the children gone—they needed them gone in a way that rendered the land completely condemned.”

“Shut her mouth!”

The roar came not from Julian Bellamy, but from the back of the room.

Marcus Varrick—the silver-haired titan of American logistics—pushed through the crowd of petrified guests. His bespoke tuxedo was pristine, but his face was mottled with purple rage. Behind him stood three more private security officers, their heavy sidearms unholstered.

“Julian, you fool,” Marcus hissed, glaring at his business partner. “I told you this loose end would come back to strangle us. You swore she died in that fire!”

“She was a nineteen-year-old runaway with no birth certificate!” Julian shouted back, losing his composure completely. “The building fell on her! How was I supposed to know she crawled out of the rubble?”

“Because you never checked the morgue yourself!” Marcus spat. He turned his dead, ruthless eyes toward Mara Keene. “Miss Keene. It seems you survived an inferno only to walk into a firing squad. Hand over the documents, or we turn this entire room into a graveyard. Do you really think these socialites will talk once they see what happens to traitors?”

The guests shrieked in renewed horror. The realization that their own peers, the titans they dined with, were ready to execute them to preserve their empire sent waves of blind panic through the crowd.

“Daddy, please!” Celeste wept, falling to her knees beside Adrian. “Stop this! Tell me it’s not true!”

“Be quiet, Celeste!” Marcus snapped without looking at her. “Everything you wear, the diamonds around your neck, the penthouse you sleep in, exists because I had the stomach to make the hard choices! You think high society is built on tea parties? It’s built on concrete and graves!”

Celeste looked up at her father, her eyes wide with unadulterated shock. For twenty-four years, she had lived in a gilded cage, believing she was royalty. In ten seconds, the illusion had been torn to shreds, revealing the vultures underneath.

Mara tightened her grip on the submachine gun. “Marcus, your men might kill me. But you can’t shoot the millions of people watching this screen right now.”

Suddenly, the red emergency lighting flickered violently.

From deep within the building's basement, a deafening horn sounded—the building’s primary fire suppression sequence had just been manually tripped.
