Chapter 9 - Shattered Glass

The Grand Savoy’s main floor was clearing as frightened guests managed to smash through the terrace windows. Alarms wailed throughout the building, their high-pitched sirens harmonizing with the distant, approaching screams of emergency vehicles.

Mara stepped over Julian’s limp body, grabbed the heavy gray envelope containing the original forensic documents, and sprinted toward the northern mezzanine.

Adrian and Celeste were waiting near the heavy fire-barrier doors that separated the ballroom from the outer grand lobby. The doors were five-inch-thick steel security shutters, lowered automatically to seal the building.

“It’s deadbolted!” Adrian shouted, slamming his shoulder against the steel in vain. “The manual crank is jammed!”

“Move!” Mara ordered.

She swiped Marcus Varrick’s gold keycard through the recessed reader beside the door frame. The scanner chimed once, flashing green, but the motor whined and groaned, struggling against an electronic override.

“They're locking us in from the outside,” Celeste panicked, clutching Adrian’s arm. “They’re going to seal the building and gas it!”

“Stand back!” Mara shouted.

She unhooked an emergency fire axe from the glass display case on the wall. With terrifying strength born of pure adrenaline, she wedged the pick end of the axe into the gap between the descending shutter and the marble sill. Using the handle as a lever, she put her entire body weight into it, wrenching the steel upward just enough to create an eighteen-inch gap.

“Slide under! NOW!” Mara yelled.

Celeste didn't hesitate; she dove onto the slick floor, squeezing beneath the heavy steel barrier. Adrian went next, his broad shoulders barely scraping through the opening.

“Mara! Come on!” Adrian reached his hands back under the shutter, his face desperate.

Just as Mara dropped to her stomach to slide through, the roar of automatic rifle fire echoed across the lobby.

A squad of black-clad operators—not Julian’s private security, but unmarked, professional paramilitary contractors wearing digital camouflage—breached the front glass atrium of the hotel. They moved in precise, terrifying military formation, their suppressed weapons spitting deadly fire toward anyone in their path.

*Julian wasn't lying,* Mara realized in a flash of icy horror. *The real clean-up crew has arrived.*

Mara grabbed Adrian’s outstretched hands. With a desperate heave, Adrian yanked her beneath the shutter just as a hail of high-caliber rounds slammed into the steel, indenting the metal like raindrops on a tin roof.

Mara rolled onto the lobby floor, springing to her feet. The majestic glass facade of the Savoy was shattering inward under a barrage of flashbangs and tactical smoke.

“Out the service docks!” Mara commanded, pulling Adrian and Celeste toward the private parking garage. “Move, move, MOVE!”
