Chapter 10 - Seizing the Throne

By Friday afternoon, the transition was total.
Aegis Logic was officially absorbed under the umbrella of Bennett Capital. With Lucas removed for cause and facing imminent federal indictments for embezzlement, the board of directors voted unanimously to appoint me as Chief Executive Officer.
Arthur Sterling was the first to sign the restructured deal.
He sat across from me in my new corner office on the forty-second floor, a panoramic view of Lake Michigan sprawling behind my desk.
"Seventy-five million," Arthur said, sliding the newly drafted term sheet across the glass. "Twenty-five million more than we offered Lucas. On one condition."
"Which is?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
"You run the company. No puppet CEOs. No smooth-talking figureheads. We want the architect at the helm."
I picked up the Montblanc pen, reviewed the valuation clauses, and signed my name with a steady, decisive stroke: *Sophia Bennett.*
"Welcome to the team, Mr. Sterling," I said, shaking his hand.
Within forty-eight hours, the media narrative flipped entirely. The headlines in *Forbes*, *TechCrunch*, and the *Chicago Tribune* were deafening:
*THE ARCHITECT UNMASKED: SOPHIA BENNETT TAKES FULL CONTROL OF AEGIS LOGIC AFTER EXPOSING FOUNDER'S FRAUD.*
*HOW ONE WOMAN DISMANTLED A $80M TECH BRO IN UNDER SEVEN DAYS.*
Lucas was released on bail that evening, his passport seized, his assets frozen, staying in a ratty studio apartment paid for by his estranged brother in Indiana. He was awaiting trial. His reputation was ashes. His empire was mine.
I walked back into the Winnetka mansion that night.
The house was clean, quiet, and peaceful. The obnoxious modern art Lucas had bought to impress his friends had been removed. In its place was warmth, space, and dignity.
I poured myself a glass of vintage Cabernet, walked out onto the stone terrace overlooking the dark, whispering trees, and toasted the silent night.
May you like
I had won. Perfectly. Completely. Ruthlessly.
