Chapter 7 - The Locks Are Changed

By 4:00 PM, the news of Aegis Logic’s canceled funding round had sent shockwaves through Chicago’s tech corridors.

Lucas didn't stay at the office. He fled, ignoring the desperate calls from his PR team, and sped straight to our gated estate in Winnetka. He thought that inside those ten-thousand-square-foot stone walls, he could regroup, hide behind his home sanctuary, and figure out how to corner me.

He pulled his black Porsche Carrera into the circular driveway, tires throwing gravel.

He didn't make it to the front door.

Two heavy-duty commercial moving trucks were parked on the lawn. Three men in uniform were loading large, shrink-wrapped crates into the rear. Standing on the wide limestone porch was a private security detail of four men in dark suits, alongside a locksmith working on the front door handle.

Lucas slammed his car door, his eyes bloodshot, his tie completely undone.

"What the hell is going on here?!" he screamed, storming toward the porch. "Get off my property! Get your hands off my things!"

The lead security guard, a former Marine named Bradley whom Marcus had hired that morning, stepped forward and raised a massive palm.

"Stand back, Mr. Bennett."

"This is my house!" Lucas roared, spitting as he yelled. "I pay the mortgage! Get out of my way before I have the Winnetka police throw you all in jail!"

"The Winnetka police are already inside, Lucas," a calm voice called out.

The heavy front door swung open.

I stepped onto the porch. I was wearing an ivory cashmere sweater, comfortable jeans, and holding a warm mug of tea. Beside me stood Officer Miller, the local watch commander, holding a thick stack of blue legal forms.

"Lucas Bennett," Officer Miller said firmly. "You have been served with a temporary restraining order and an exclusive occupancy order issued by the Cook County Chancery Court. You are not permitted on the premises."

"Officer, she can't do this!" Lucas pleaded, his arrogance finally cracking into naked terror. "We’re married! The deed is in both our names!"

"Actually, it isn't," I said gently, stepping to the edge of the stone steps. "The deed was refinanced two years ago under the Bennett Family Trust to secure the bridge loan for your company’s server expansion. The sole trustee of that trust is Bennett Capital LLC. And as of 9:00 AM today, I removed you as an authorized manager due to criminal breach of fiduciary duty."

Lucas stared at me, his mouth opening and closing like a fish pulled from water.

"My clothes... my watch collection... my cars!"

"Your personal clothing and non-marital items have been boxed and sent to a climate-controlled storage unit in Skokie," I said, pointing toward the moving trucks. "The key and three months of prepaid rent are with your attorney. The Porsche is leased under the Aegis corporate account, which has been frozen by the forensic receiver. You'll need to call an Uber."

Lucas looked around at the pristine neighborhood, at the stone facade of the home he had bragged about for half a decade, at the guards standing shoulder-to-shoulder.

"You planned this," he hissed, his voice trembling with a mixture of hatred and utter disbelief. "Last night... you let me do that last night just to set this up."

"No, Lucas," I said, meeting his bloodshot gaze with cold, untroubled clarity. "Last night you showed me who you truly were. Today, I simply showed you what you actually owned."

May you like

"Nothing."
