Chapter 5 - The Boardroom Ambush

By 11:30 AM, the atmosphere in Aegis Logic was electric with tension.

Rumors of Chloe’s tearful, security-escorted exit twenty minutes earlier had spread like wildfire through the open-plan bullpen. The engineers were huddled near the espresso machines, whispering.

Then the elevator chimed.

Lucas stepped out, looking radiant. He was wearing his signature navy blazer, crisp white shirt, and an expansive smile. He had Arthur Sterling, the venture capital titan, by the elbow, alongside two senior investment partners.

"I’m telling you, Arthur," Lucas was booming, laughing that easy, charismatic laugh that had charmed me seven years ago, "the architecture is bulletproof. We’ve stress-tested the protocol against every major cyber threat vector. When we sign Thursday, we’re not just selling a platform—we’re setting the industry standard."

"I hope so, Lucas," Arthur Sterling said, his grey eyebrows knit with calculating precision. "Fifty million is a significant commitment. We need zero surprises."

"With me, Arthur, you only get victories," Lucas grinned.

He led the entourage toward the main executive boardroom. He pushed the heavy double doors open—and stopped dead in his tracks.

I was sitting at the head of the twenty-foot mahogany conference table.

Beside me sat Marcus Vance, his briefcase open, several neat stacks of red-labeled folders laid out in front of him. On the massive 85-inch digital display behind me, the Aegis Logic corporate structure was mapped out in stark, glowing blue lines.

Lucas’s face flashed from shock to blinding rage, though he masked it almost instantly for his guests.

"Sophia?" Lucas let out a forced, patronizing chuckle. "Gentlemen, I apologize. My wife seems to have gotten her schedule confused. Darling, this is a private executive session for the Series B syndicate. Why don't you wait in my office?"

I didn't blink. I didn't smile.

"Sit down, Lucas," I said, my voice cutting through the room with absolute authority. "Mr. Sterling, please take a seat. What you are about to see will save your fund fifty million dollars."

Arthur Sterling’s eyes sharpened. He looked at Lucas, whose jaw was clenching so hard a vein bulged against his temple, and then looked at me. Without a word, the billionaire took a seat across from me. His partners followed.

"Sophia, that is enough!" Lucas snapped, stepping forward, his voice dropping into that familiar, menacing tone he usually reserved for closed doors at home. "You are embarrassing yourself. Get out of that chair before I call security."

"Security has already been updated, Lucas," Marcus Vance spoke up, handing a blue-backed legal document across the table to Arthur Sterling. "And if you come within five hundred feet of Mrs. Bennett, the two armed Chicago police officers waiting in the reception lounge will place you under arrest for violating an active protection order."

The room went dead silent.

Lucas looked like he had been struck across the face with a lead pipe. "What... what did you say?"

May you like

"Sit down, Lucas," Arthur Sterling ordered, his tone suddenly flat and icy. "Or don't. But Mrs. Bennett has the floor."
