Chapter 10 - The Vow of Ashes

Dante hesitated, his breath hitching. "Can I... may I come closer?"
Emily nodded faintly.
He walked over to the side of the bed as if stepping on glass. He knelt down beside her, keeping his hands carefully on the edge of the mattress, gazing at the two tiny miracles resting against her chest.
"They have your nose," Emily whispered, a ghost of a smile touching her cracked lips. "Both of them."
"They have your strength," Dante replied, his voice choked with emotion. "If they took after me, they wouldn't have survived."
Emily looked down at her son and daughter, her fingers gently tracing their miniature ears. "What are their names?"
Dante shook his head. "You name them, Emily. You carried them through hell. You protected them when I failed. You have the right."
Emily stayed quiet for a long moment, listening to the synchronized breathing of her babies. "Alexander," she said softly. "Defender of men. And Sophia. Wisdom."
"Alexander and Sophia," Dante repeated, the names sounding like a prayer on his lips. "They're beautiful."
Emily shifted slightly, looking directly into Dante’s dark, tormented eyes. "I saw the divorce papers you left on the table."
Dante’s heart squeezed painfully, but he kept his voice steady. "They're signed by my hand, Emily. Everything I promised is yours. You don't have to forgive me. You don't even have to like me. I will buy you a villa anywhere in the world, guard it with my most loyal soldiers from a distance, and never bother you again."
Emily looked at him for a long, agonizing minute.
"I won't sign them," she whispered.
Dante’s eyes widened in utter disbelief. He thought he was hallucinating. "Emily... what did you say?"
"I won't sign them," she repeated, her voice gaining strength, firm and resolute. "Not because I’ve forgiven you, Dante. Because what happened—the neglect, the blindness, the cruelty you allowed under our roof—cannot be wiped away with an apology or a stack of money."
She reached out her free hand and touched his rough cheek. Dante closed his eyes, leaning into her palm, a shudder running through his massive frame.
"I am not going to run away and hide like a victim," Emily said, her hazel eyes blazing with an unyielding inner fire. "This is my home. Alexander and Sophia are the heirs to Chicago. And you, Dante Russo, owe me a lifetime of penance."
"I will give you ten lifetimes," Dante vowed fiercely, kissing the inside of her palm, his tears wetting her skin. "I will burn down every enemy who ever looks at you sideways. I will serve you on my knees. I will spend every second of my life earning the right to be called your husband again."
"Good," Emily said, a real, radiant smile finally gracing her lips. "Then start by bringing me a glass of water, husband."
May you like
Dante laughed through his tears, leaping up to pour the water, his soul resurrected from the ashes of his own foolishness.
For the first time in six months, peace descended upon them like a warm blanket.
