Chapter 7 - The Sanctuary

When Dante returned to the hospital, dawn was breaking over Lake Michigan, painting the sky in pale shades of rose and gold.
He had showered and changed into fresh clothes at a nearby hotel, scrubbing his skin until it was raw, trying desperately to wash away the scent of gunpowder and betrayal. He carried a small, velvet box in his coat pocket.
He walked into Emily’s room.
She was awake, propped up against the pillows. She looked stronger than she had the night before, but the emotional wall she had erected between them was thicker than titanium. A nurse was adjusting her IV line.
"You can leave us, please," Dante said gently to the nurse.
The nurse looked at Emily first, seeking permission. Only when Emily gave a slight, resigned nod did the woman leave the room.
Dante stood at the foot of the bed. He looked exhausted, the dark circles under his eyes revealing the torment eating him alive from the inside out.
"Vincent Moretti is in custody," Dante said quietly. "He will never walk without crutches, and he will never see the outside of a maximum-security prison. Vanessa has been handed over to the feds. Her life is over, Emily."
Emily looked down at her hands folded over the white blanket. "Does that make the bruised marks on my arms disappear, Dante? Does that undo the six months I spent crying on the kitchen floor while she wore my clothes and answered your calls?"
"No," Dante choked out. "Nothing will ever undo that. I know that."
He walked slowly to the side of her bed and placed the small velvet box on the nightstand.
"What is that?" she asked, not touching it.
"Your wedding ring," Dante said softly. "I took it back from her. I had it cleaned and blessed. But I’m not asking you to put it back on."
Emily glanced at the box, her expression unreadable.
"I had my lawyers draw up documents this morning," Dante continued, pulling an envelope from his pocket and laying it beside the ring. "The penthouse in Gold Coast. The estate in Tuscany. Three offshore trusts funded with two hundred million dollars. They are entirely in your name, Emily. No strings attached. No joint custody clauses. You have full, unconditional legal custody of our children."
Emily’s head snapped up, her eyes wide with genuine shock. "What?"
"If you want a divorce," Dante said, his voice breaking, tears finally spilling over his dark lashes, "I will sign it today. I will pack my things and move out of the city. I will never force you to look at my face again. You and our babies will be safe, wealthy, and free from the shadow of my name."
Emily stared at him. She saw the trembling hands of the man who ruled an underworld empire. She saw the profound, absolute ruin in his eyes. He wasn't playing a game; he was offering to cut out his own heart and hand it to her on a silver platter.
"Why would you do that?" she whispered. "You killed for your empire. You bleed for it every day."
"Because my empire is worthless without you," Dante cried out, the raw agony spilling from his soul. "I built all of it to give you a castle, Emily! And instead, I turned it into your prison! If the only way you can heal is away from me... then I will give you that peace. Even if it kills me."
Emily looked from the envelope to Dante. The silence stretched between them, heavy with years of unspoken love, betrayal, and pain.

Just as she parted her lips to speak, the monitor beside the bed emitted a sharp, erratic alarm.
Emily gasped, clutching her abdomen as a violent, crushing pain seized her body. "Dante—!"
