Chapter 11 - The Phantom's Retribution

Three days later, the winter sun shone brightly over Chicago.
Dante had spared no expense transforming the entire executive wing of Northwestern Memorial into a private, impenetrable fortress. Twenty elite Russo soldiers guarded every exit, every elevator, and every rooftop access point.
Inside the suite, the atmosphere was warm and filled with laughter. Alexander and Sophia were thriving, gaining weight rapidly, sleeping peacefully in a double mahogany crib beside Emily’s bed.
Emily was dressed in a soft, cream-colored cashmere sweater Dante had brought from home. The color had returned to her cheeks, and the hollow, haunted look in her eyes was slowly being replaced by the glow of motherhood.
Dante walked into the room carrying a silver tray with fresh broth, fruit, and hot tea. He had personally cooked the food in the hospital’s executive kitchen, refusing to let anyone else touch anything Emily consumed.
"Lunch is served, my queen," Dante said, setting the tray on the mobile table and smiling warmly.
Emily rolled her eyes playfully, though her heart warmed at the sight of the ruthless mafia boss wearing a chef’s apron over his tailored slacks. "You're getting too good at this, Dante. The men outside are going to lose their fear of you."
"Let them," Dante smiled, leaning down to press a tender kiss to the top of her head. "I only care about the fear and respect of one woman in this city."
He walked over to the crib, his expression softening instantly into absolute adoration as he peered down at the sleeping twins. Little Alexander was sucking on his thumb, while Sophia was curled into a tiny ball of blankets.
Dante reached into his pocket and pulled out the small velvet box from before. He opened it, revealing Emily’s original wedding ring, completely restored.
"Emily," he said, turning back to her with a serious, vulnerable expression. "I know we have a long road ahead. But I want to start it properly. Will you let me put this back on your finger?"
Emily looked at the ring, then up at the man who had brought down an entire syndicate in twenty-four hours just to avenge her honor. The ice in her heart hadn't completely melted, but the warmth was spreading fast.
She slowly extended her left hand. "Only if you promise that the next time someone tries to order me around in my own house, you let me shoot them myself."
Dante laughed, a deep, genuine sound, and slid the diamond ring back onto her finger. It fit perfectly.
Suddenly, the hospital’s emergency lights flashed red.
The high-pitched wail of a perimeter breach alarm screamed through the ceiling speakers.
*BZZZZZT! BZZZZZT!*
Dante’s smile vanished in a millisecond. His instincts snapped instantly from loving father to lethal predator. He drew his Kimber .45 from beneath his arm, stepping directly between the door and the crib.
The suite door burst open.
Leo stumbled inside, his face pale, clutching a bleeding gunshot wound on his shoulder. "Boss! We’ve got a problem!"
"What happened?" Dante demanded, his voice turning to steel. "Who is hitting us?"
"It’s not Moretti!" Leo gasped, breathing heavily. "A private transport convoy was ambushed twenty minutes ago on the I-90 expressway! The federal van transporting Vanessa Laurent was blown apart with military-grade explosives!"
Dante’s eyes narrowed into lethal slits. "Did she die?"
"No, Boss!" Leo shouted over the blaring siren. "She was extracted! A private foreign mercenary team took her! And they just breached the hospital basement power grid! They cut the main generators—they're coming up the service elevators right now!"
The lights in the room suddenly died, plunging the suite into pitch-black darkness, illuminated only by the rhythmic, blood-red flashing of the emergency beacon.
From the baby monitor on the nightstand, static hissed violently.
Then, a distorted, familiar female voice crackled through the small speaker, giggling with psychotic delight:
*“Did you really think it was over, Dante darling? You took my diamonds... now I’m coming to take your twins.”*
May you like
Emily gasped, lunging toward the crib to cover Alexander and Sophia with her own body.
Dante cocked his weapon in the flashing red dark, his eyes blazing with pure hellfire as heavy, tactical boots began marching down the hallway directly outside their door.
