Chapter 10 - The Gala of Vengeance

Two weeks later, the annual Vance Foundation Winter Gala took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

It was the most coveted ticket of the social season. The grand hall beneath the Temple of Dendur was filled with billionaires, foreign dignitaries, Hollywood royalty, and the most influential media barons in the world.

And all of them were waiting for one woman.

When the double doors opened at the top of the grand staircase, a collective hush fell over the three hundred guests below.

Audrey Miller stood at the apex of the stairs, a vision of absolute triumph. She wore a backless midnight-blue silk gown that shimmered under the chandeliers like liquid starlight. Her hair was styled in vintage Hollywood waves, cascading over one bare shoulder. Around her throat sat the Vance heirloom—a sixty-carat flawless sapphire that had once belonged to European royalty.

Beside her, Daniel Vance stood in a bespoke black tuxedo, his hand resting securely on the small of her back. Together, they looked like gods looking down on mortals.

"Look at her," someone whispered in the crowd.

"She looks magnificent."

"Did you hear? The mayor signed the Horizon contract yesterday. Vance-Miller is breaking ground in March."

Audrey walked down the marble steps beside Daniel, her chin high, her smile radiant and effortless. Guests parted like the Red Sea, eager to offer congratulations, eager to erase their previous complicity in Lucas’s cruelty. Her mother tried to catch her eye from across the room, wearing a desperate, pleading expression, but Audrey looked straight through her as if she were made of glass.

Then, from the shadows near the catering entrance, a commotion broke out.

Lucas Sterling stumbled into the hall.

He looked unrecognizable. His hair was greasy and uncombed, his tuxedo rumpled and stained. He had lost twenty pounds in two weeks, his cheeks sunken, his eyes wild and bloodshot. Security had barred him from the event, but he had slipped in through the service corridors, desperate, broken, and unhinged.

"Audrey!" Lucas screamed, his voice cracking, echoing through the cavernous hall. "Audrey, look at me!"

The music stopped. Guests recoiled in horror, whispering frantically.

Audrey stopped walking. Daniel moved to shield her, but Audrey placed a gentle hand on his arm.

"It’s alright," she said softly. "I'm not afraid."

She stepped forward, standing at the edge of the reflecting pool, looking down at the man who had once held her life in his fists.

Lucas stumbled toward her, weeping openly, falling to his knees on the cold marble floor. "Audrey, please... the bank foreclosed on the penthouse today. Naomi stole my remaining offshore accounts and fled to Dubai. The federal prosecutors... they're issuing an indictment tomorrow! You have to drop the charges! Tell Daniel to call off his lawyers! I loved you! You know I loved you!"

Audrey looked down at him. Two weeks ago, she had been the one kneeling on marble, begging for mercy while he sneered down at her.

Now, Lucas Sterling was on his knees, a broken beggar groveling before the queen he had tried to destroy.

"You never loved me, Lucas," Audrey said, her voice carrying clearly across the silent ballroom. "You loved owning me. You loved using my mind to feed your vanity. But a parasite can only survive while the host is asleep."

She turned her back on him, walking back to Daniel’s side.

"Security," Daniel said, not even glancing at the kneeling man. "Remove this trash from the building."

Four security guards converged on Lucas, lifting him by his arms as he kicked and screamed, his hysterical cries echoing until the heavy brass doors slammed shut behind him.

The orchestra began to play again. The crowd erupted into applause, raising their glasses to Audrey Miller and Daniel Vance.

Daniel pulled Audrey close against his chest as they stepped out onto the dance floor. "Happy, my love?"

May you like

Audrey looked up into his dark, devoted eyes, her heart overflowing with a peace she had never known. "More than happy, Daniel. I'm finally whole."
