Chapter 2 - The Golden Cage Shatters

The silence inside Daniel Vance’s penthouse was heavier than the noise of the ballroom had been. Floor-to-ceiling glass overlooked the jagged silhouette of Manhattan, where dawn was bleeding pale gold across the skyline. Down there, millions of people were waking up to the morning commute. Up here, fifty stories above the grime and the crowds, Audrey felt as though she had been stripped of her skin.
She pulled the cashmere throw tighter over her shoulders, her fingers trembling against the soft gray wool. Her scalp burned where Lucas’s fist had twisted into her roots, forcing her down on marble slick with spilled champagne. Her knee, bound in white surgical gauze, ached with a dull, sickening throb.
"Drink," Daniel said. His voice wasn't gentle, but it lacked the sharp, serrated edge of Lucas’s cruelty. It was steady. A foundation of reinforced steel.
He set a crystal tumbler of water on the nightstand, accompanied by two white caplets. When Audrey didn't move, he pulled up the leather armchair opposite the bed, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees. In the soft morning light, Daniel Vance looked less like the mythical corporate executioner Wall Street feared and more like a man holding back an avalanche with his bare hands. His immaculate white dress shirt was unbuttoned at the throat, his watch catching the sunrise.
"My phone," Audrey whispered, her voice rough, cracked from screaming in a room full of people who had only watched. "Where is it?"
"On my desk. Switched off," Daniel replied evenly.
"I need to turn it on. Lucas will—"
"Lucas will do nothing to you ever again."
"You don't understand," she said, a bitter, breathless laugh catching in her throat. She looked down at her hands. The diamond engagement ring Lucas had forced onto her finger three years ago was missing. She blinked, staring at her bare, bruised knuckle. "My ring..."
"In the trash at the Plaza," Daniel said without blinking. "Where it belonged."
Panic flared in her chest, hot and suffocating. "He’ll ruin my father’s foundation. He controls the trusts, Daniel! He made sure of it before my father passed. If I don't go back, if I don't apologize to Naomi—"
"Apologize?" Daniel’s eyes narrowed into dark, lethal slits. The temperature in the room dropped ten degrees. "You were dragged across a floor in front of three hundred people by a coward who hides behind trust funds and a sycophantic press. You knelt because he used force. You will never bend your knee to him or anyone else as long as there is breath in my body."
Audrey stared at him, bewildered. "Why are you doing this? We barely know each other. You’re his rival. This... this is just corporate theater to you, isn't it? A chance to publicly humiliate the Sterling family?"
Daniel didn't flinch. He reached out, his hand pausing inches above hers before he gently closed his fingers over her cold, bruised wrist. His touch was warm, startlingly steady.
"Do you really believe I don't know who you are, Audrey?" he asked quietly. "Seven years ago, when the Sterling Group bought the Hudson Yards blueprints that made them a national name, Lucas didn't draw those lines. He didn't calculate the weight-bearing loads or design the cantilevered glass. You did. You were twenty-three, hiding behind an intern’s desk, letting that parasite slap his name on your brilliance."
Audrey’s breath hitched. No one knew that. Her father had made her swear never to speak of it, insisting that a woman in high society needed a powerful husband more than an architectural license.
Before she could speak, the intercom on Daniel’s desk chimed. His chief of security spoke in a clipped, low tone.
"Mr. Vance. Sterling’s lawyers just released a statement to the Associated Press. And there’s a crowd of reporters forming in the lobby downstairs."

Daniel didn't take his eyes off Audrey. "Bring me the tablet. And summon my legal team." He turned back to Audrey, his expression unreadable. "The battle has started, Audrey. You can spend it hiding under my blanket, or you can watch me take back everything he stole from you."
