Chapter 9 - Shadows in the Penthouse

That evening, the city was draped in a blanket of heavy, cold rain.
Inside Daniel’s penthouse, the lights were dimmed. A fire crackled in the wide stone hearth, casting long, dancing amber shadows across the minimalist room. Two champagne flutes sat untouched on the low marble coffee table.
Audrey stood by the glass, looking out over the glittering sea of skyscrapers. The city didn't feel terrifying anymore. For the first time in her life, she felt like she belonged to it.
The sound of footsteps made her turn. Daniel walked over, holding two glasses of scotch instead of the champagne. He handed one to her.
"To the chief architect of Vance-Miller Enterprises," he said softly, raising his glass.
Audrey clinked her glass against his. The amber liquid burned pleasantly down her throat, warming her from the inside out. "Vance-Miller? You're really putting my name on the marquee?"
"I don't steal other people’s genius," Daniel said, his eyes fixed on hers. "Especially not yours."
A heavy, charged silence fell between them. The tension that had been simmering beneath the surface—beneath the lawsuits, the boardrooms, and the public scandals—finally rose to the top. Audrey felt her pulse quicken.
"Why, Daniel?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. "You knew about the blueprints years ago. You could have bought them from my father. You could have exposed Lucas long before this. Why did you wait until that night at the Plaza?"
Daniel set his glass down on the table. He took a step toward her, his gaze intense, stripping away every defense she had left.
"Because seven years ago, at your father's exhibition, you were laughing," Daniel said, his voice deep, gravelly with an emotion he rarely allowed anyone to see. "You were vibrant. You were full of life, and when you talked about building structures that touched the clouds, your eyes lit up the entire room. I wanted to approach you then. But before I could, your father announced your engagement to Lucas Sterling."
Audrey’s breath hitched. "You... you were there?"
"I was there," Daniel said. He took another step, closing the distance until she could feel the heat radiating from his body. "And for three years, I watched that worthless bastard extinguish your light. I watched you stop smiling. I watched you hide behind him. And when he put his hands on you that night at the gala..." Daniel’s jaw clenched, his eyes flashing with a dark, primal rage. "I swore that if I had to burn this entire city to the ground to pull you out of his shadow, I would do it."
Audrey stared at him, her heart thumping wildly against her ribs. All the fear, the betrayal, the humiliation of the past three years melted away, replaced by something fierce and overwhelming.
"Daniel..."
He reached out, his thumb gently brushing across her cheekbone, tracing the faint purple bruise that was already beginning to fade. "You don't owe me anything, Audrey. You are free now. You can take your fifty percent and walk away to any corner of the world. But if you stay..."
"If I stay?" she whispered, leaning unconsciously into his touch.
"If you stay," Daniel murmured, his lips inches from hers, "I will spend the rest of my life making sure no one ever makes you feel small again."
Audrey didn't answer with words. She reached up, tangled her fingers in the lapels of his suit, and pulled him down to her mouth.
May you like
The kiss was desperate, electric, and full of a hunger that had been denied for years. Daniel grooved an arm around her waist, lifting her against him as if she weighed nothing, his mouth claiming hers with a fierce, possessive tenderness that made her whole world spin.
