Chapter 9 - The Wolf at the Boardroom

At 11:55 AM, the atmosphere on the sixty-eighth floor of Whitaker Tower was stifling.

Caroline Whitaker sat at the head of the polished obsidian conference table, dressed in a sharp black mourning suit that looked both sorrowful and aggressively commanding. Around her sat the senior board members—elderly billionaires, venture capitalists, and long-time institutional investors.

"I know this is a profound shock to everyone," Caroline said, dabbing a nonexistent tear from her eye with a black silk handkerchief. "Nathan’s mental decline has been accelerated and catastrophic. This morning, he suffered an acute paranoid episode at our home. He fled the premises in a state of psychosis. Julian went after him to ensure his safety... and Julian’s vehicle was found in the Bradbury Reservoir."

A collective gasp rippled through the room. Board members exchanged horrified, panicked whispers.

"Julian is gone," Caroline continued, her voice trembling with manufactured grief. "And Nathan is currently an armed fugitive. Under Article 12 of the company bylaws, during an executive emergency of this magnitude, the voting control must immediately default to the primary family trust—which I administer."

She slid a thick document toward Arthur Pendelton, the elderly chairman of the governance committee. "We must sign this resolution now to prevent our stock from collapsing when the market opens."

Pendelton adjusted his spectacles, his hand shaking. "This is... unprecedented, Caroline. Nathan has been the bedrock of this firm for thirty years. To declare him legally incompetent without a formal medical evaluation—"

"The evaluation is attached, Arthur," Caroline snapped, her velvet facade slipping for a brief second before she regained her composure. "Signed by Dr. Robert Sterling, Chief of Neurology at Cedars-Sinai. If we delay, the hedge funds will short Whitaker Enterprises into oblivion by 1:00 PM. Sign the paper."

Pendelton unscrewed his pen. The other board members murmured in defeated agreement.

Suddenly, the heavy glass double doors of the boardroom rattled violently.

The two armed private security guards stationed outside did not open the doors. Instead, their bodies hit the glass with a sickening thud, sliding down the frosted panels, unconscious.

The doors swung open.
