Chapter 8 - Safehouse and Sabotage

A dead silence hung on the other end of the line. For five agonizing seconds, Caroline said nothing. When she finally spoke, her voice had devolved into a chilling hiss.

"You think you've won because of a car crash?" she spat. "The board of directors is assembling at Whitaker Tower in twenty minutes, Nathan. Julian had your signature digitized. The emergency transfer of voting rights was executed electronically ten minutes ago. You are legally incapacitated. Your accounts are frozen. If you show your face in Los Angeles, the private security force I hired under corporate retainer will shoot you on sight for corporate espionage and assault."

"You forgot one detail, Caroline," Nathan said, his voice dropping into a deadly, quiet cadence.

"Oh? And what is that?"

"Noah was holding the phone when you told Julian that you were done living like a guest in my kingdom. And Frank Keller has already uploaded the uncompressed audio to federal servers."

Caroline laughed—a shrill, manic sound. "Federal servers? Do you know who owns the district attorney in this county, Nathan? My family built this town while yours was still shoveling coal. That audio will be suppressed before the sun sets. Enjoy your last hours as a dead man walking."

She disconnected.

Nathan didn't hesitate. He climbed back into the Shelby and drove down the western slope of the mountain, arriving twenty minutes later at an unassuming industrial park outside Carpinteria.

Frank Keller stood outside an unmarked warehouse bay, his silver hair cropped close, an unlit cigar clamped between his teeth. Next to him, Elena and Noah sat safely inside a secure office, wrapped in warm blankets, sipping hot cocoa.

"You look like hell, Whitaker," Frank said, offering a rough hand as Nathan stepped out of the battered muscle car.

"I’ve had worse Mondays," Nathan replied, checking on Elena and Noah through the office window. Noah looked up and flashed a timid, triumphant grin. Nathan felt a surge of warmth in his chest. "Are they safe?"

"My best men are guarding them," Frank said, nodding toward two broad-shouldered ex-Rangers standing watch. "Nobody touches that kid. But your wife wasn't lying on the phone. Julian's lawyers filed an emergency declaration of incapacity with the Superior Court forty minutes ago, backed by a medical signature claiming you have early-onset dementia. They’ve locked your corporate credentials."

"They need a seventy percent board quorum to ratify the leadership transfer," Nathan said, walking toward a table covered in laptop screens and satellite uplink equipment. "Who’s inside the room?"

Frank brought up a live thermal surveillance feed of the top floor of Whitaker Tower in downtown Los Angeles. "Nine board members are already seated in the executive boardroom. Caroline’s limousine just pulled into the underground parking garage. The vote happens at noon. You have thirty-two minutes to cross forty miles of highway."

"I don't need forty miles of highway," Nathan said, pointing toward the helipad at the rear of the industrial complex. "Is the bird fueled?"

Frank grinned a wolfish grin. "Twin-engine Bell 429. Ready to spin."
