Chapter 10 - Unmasking the Serpent

Nathan Whitaker stepped across the threshold.

His suit was torn at the shoulder, covered in white dust from the blown garage, and his knuckles were raw and bruised. But his posture was that of a king reclaiming his throne. Behind him walked three federal agents in blue windbreakers, their badges glinting under the recessed fluorescent lights.

Caroline rose from her chair as if she had seen a demon rise from the floorboards. The color drained completely from her face. Her teacup slipped from her hand, shattering on the obsidian table, dark liquid pooling across the legal documents.

"Nathan?" Pendelton gasped, dropping his pen. "My God... you're alive!"

"Very much alive, Arthur," Nathan said, his voice cutting through the frozen room like a scalpel. "And entirely of sound mind."

"Security!" Caroline screamed, retreating toward the panoramic window overlooking the Los Angeles skyline. "He’s armed! He’s psychotic! Take him down!"

None of her private guards moved. In fact, four more federal marshals entered the room, surrounding the perimeter.

Nathan walked slowly down the length of the table, his footsteps heavy and measured. He pulled Noah’s burner phone from his pocket, connected it via Bluetooth to the boardroom’s state-of-the-art audiovisual system, and tapped the screen.

Julian’s voice boomed through the high-end ceiling speakers:

*“The curve near the reservoir is perfect. The car goes through the rail. The water does the rest. Accidental death. Tragic. Clean.”*

Then came Caroline’s cold, melodic laugh:

*“Good. I’m done living like a guest in a kingdom I helped build.”*

The boardroom descended into absolute, suffocating silence.

The directors looked at Caroline with expressions of sheer horror and disgust. Arthur Pendelton slowly pushed the legal documents away from himself, staring at her as if she were a venomous viper that had been coiled under his seat.

"It’s a deepfake!" Caroline shrieked, her voice shrill, cracking with panic as she backed against the glass wall. "Nathan generated it with AI! He's trying to frame me! Julian is dead because of him!"

"Julian died because he followed me to the reservoir to ensure I went into the water," Nathan said, stopping three feet from her. "The dashcam footage from my car and the Caltrans highway surveillance tell the entire story, Caroline. Julian’s phone was recovered from the vehicle five minutes ago. It contains four hundred encrypted messages between the two of you detailing the liquidation of eighty million dollars in Whitaker offshore assets."

The lead federal marshal stepped forward, producing a pair of steel handcuffs. "Caroline Whitaker, you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, wire fraud, and grand larceny."

Caroline looked at the handcuffs, then at Nathan. The panic in her eyes curdled into pure, unadulterated hatred.

"You think you won?" she hissed, leaning toward Nathan so only he could hear. "You think Julian and I were acting alone? You arrogant, blind fool. We were just the cleanup crew. You have no idea who actually funded this takeover, do you?"

Nathan’s brow furrowed. "What are you talking about?"

May you like

Caroline smiled—a blood-chilling, broken grin. "Check your primary holding company in Geneva, Nathan. The real buyers didn't want your life insurance. They wanted your defense contracts."
