Chapter 9 - Truth and Reckoning

Tyler and I rushed forward. "How is she, Doctor?" Tyler pleaded.

"She’s alive," the doctor said, offering a weary but genuine smile. "It was close. Severe hypothermia, sepsis stemming from an untreated umbilical cord infection, and extreme dehydration. But her stomach lining was remarkably intact. Whatever you were feeding her kept her organs from shutting down."

A massive sob tore from Tyler’s chest, and he collapsed back onto the chairs.

"What about the mother?" I asked, keeping my focus.

"Chloe is severely malnourished and suffering from internal trauma from past domestic abuse," the doctor replied, his eyes narrowing with concern. "Hospital social work and law enforcement have already been notified. Two state troopers are on their way to take her statement."

Within an hour, the waiting room filled with local authorities. The patrol car that had spotted the black pickup had managed to capture its license plate on dashcam footage. It belonged to an associate of Marcus Vance. A coordinated raid on Marcus’s rural compound was launched before sunrise.

By morning, news reached us: Marcus had been taken into federal custody without bail, facing a mountain of charges including kidnapping, aggravated assault, and weapons trafficking. The terror that had chained Chloe for three years was finally shattered.

I sat beside Chloe's hospital bed as the morning sun filtered through the blinds. She held her daughter, who was sleeping peacefully under a heated lamp, hooked to IV fluids but breathing on her own.

"Brenda," Chloe whispered, reaching out to touch my hand. Her voice was full of humility and deep, unpayable gratitude. "Tyler told me what he did. How he took your milk without telling you. I am so sorry. You saved my baby's life. Both of you did."

I squeezed her fragile fingers gently. "She’s family, Chloe. And so are you. You will never have to run from him again."
