Chapter 8 - Life on the Edge

The emergency room exploded into organized chaos.

Nurses swept the infant out of my arms, sprinting toward the trauma resuscitation room with pediatric doctors trailing behind. Another team wheeled Chloe onto a gurney, her blood pressure bottoming out as the sheer shock and adrenaline of the escape finally overwhelmed her frail body.

Tyler and I were pushed into the waiting area, separated from the madness by heavy double doors. I leaned against the sterile wall, my hands shaking violently, covered in a cold sweat.

The silence that settled over us was deafening.

Tyler slowly walked toward me, tears cutting clean lines down his exhausted, ash-colored face. "Brenda... I..."

"Don't," I held up a hand, my voice cracking with exhaustion. "Don't you dare speak to me right now."

"I was terrified, Brenda," he choked out, dropping onto a plastic waiting room chair and burying his head in his hands. "When Chloe showed up on Ma's doorstep two weeks ago, bleeding, holding a starving baby, she made me swear on our father's grave. Marcus told her if she ever stepped into a hospital or went to the cops, he would kill her, kill Ma, and come after us. I thought... I thought if I could just nourish the baby with your milk until she gained weight, we could figure out how to get Chloe into a hidden shelter out of state."

"You made decisions that put our daughter at risk!" I hissed, stepping closer, my fury boiling over. "You brought Marcus’s crosshairs right to Dorothy’s house! What if he followed you back to our home, Tyler? What if he saw our baby?"

Tyler flinched as if struck. He had no defense. He had operated entirely on panic and misguided heroics, blind to the catastrophic consequences of his secrecy.

Before he could speak, the double doors swung open. A tired doctor in green scrubs walked out, pulling off his surgical mask.

"Family of the infant?" he asked.
