Chapter 3 - The Confrontation

I didn’t run. My legs felt rooted into the concrete porch, weighed down by shock, grief, and an uncontrollable surge of protective fury. When Tyler pulled the heavy wooden door open, his eyes were wide with defensive panic. But the moment his gaze collided with mine, the blood visibly drained from his face.
"Brenda?" he gasped, his voice cracking. "What... what are you doing here?"
"What am I doing here?" My voice shook, rising with every syllable despite my attempt to whisper. "I followed you, Tyler! I followed my husband because he’s been sneaking out like a thief at two in the morning, stealing food from our daughter's mouth!"
"Brenda, please, keep your voice down," Dorothy plead, stepping into view with trembling hands. "Please, step inside before the neighbors hear."
"Don't tell me to be quiet!" I stepped past Tyler, pushing into the warm, stuffy parlor. I couldn't tear my eyes away from the bassinet. The tiny infant was coughing faintly, its skin blotchy and red. Looking at that helpless bundle should have softened me, but the sheer wall of lies surrounding it made me feel like I was drowning.
"Whose baby is this, Tyler?" I demanded, turning on him. "Tell me right now. Did you cheat on me? Did you father a child while I was pregnant and bring her here to play savior?"
"No! God, no, Brenda, never!" Tyler reached out for my hands, but I recoiled as if his touch were poison. Tears welled in his eyes, real and desperate. "I swear on my life, Brenda, I have never touched another woman. She isn't mine!"
"Then whose is she?" I screamed, tears finally spilling down my cheeks. "Why are you stealing my milk? Why are you hiding a sick child in a dark house instead of taking her to a hospital?"
"Because if anyone finds out she's here," Dorothy whispered, collapsing onto the edge of the sofa, "her father will kill her. And he’ll kill my daughter, too."
The room went dead silent.
My mind scrambled to piece together Dorothy's words. Tyler had a younger sister, Chloe—a troubled girl who had run away three years ago with a dangerous, abusive man and cut all contact with the family.

"Chloe?" I whispered, my anger momentarily suspended in disbelief. "Chloe is back?"
Tyler nodded slowly, pointing toward the dark stairwell leading upstairs. "She’s in the spare room, Brenda. And she’s barely hanging on."
