Chapter 4 - Bloodline in the Cellar

The air in the mansion's underground corridors smelled of damp limestone, vintage oak, and ozone from severed security cables. Julian walked with deliberate, predatory steps down the stone spiral staircase, his custom Kimber .45 drawn and ready.
Behind him, Daniel marched Michael forward, the younger brother’s hands zip-tied securely behind his back. Victoria had been locked inside the panic room on the second floor under armed guard, stripped of every communication device she possessed.
"Julian, wait," Michael muttered, stumbling on the damp steps. "Elliot isn't who you think he is. Dad didn't just leave him money. He trained him. Elliot has been running the Ricci syndicate in Chicago for the last five years. He didn't come here to share the inheritance—he came to take over the whole city."
Julian didn't answer. He reached the heavy iron gate leading into the historic wine cellar. The lock had been cleanly bypassed with an electronic frequency jammer. Pushing the gate open, Julian stepped into the vast vaulted room, surrounded by centuries-old vintages.
In the center of the room, sitting on a wooden bench under a single hanging bulb, was Allison. She was pale, a white blanket draped over her shoulders, but her breathing was steady and her eyes were alert. Standing beside her, wearing a sharp charcoal suit with sleeves rolled up, was a young man whose sharp jawline and dark, piercing eyes looked unnervingly familiar.
Looking at Elliot Ricci was like looking into a younger reflection of Don Vincent Moretti.
"You look just like the portraits upstairs," Julian said, keeping his weapon lowered but ready.
"And you have his temper, Julian," Elliot replied with a calm, disarming smile. He stepped forward with open palms, showing he was completely unarmed. "I’m glad to see you didn't sign the document. If you had, the offshore funds would have immediately transferred to a holding company controlled by Victoria’s family—the Falcone cartel."
Julian glanced toward Allison. "Are you alright?"
Allison nodded weakly, clutching a thick, leather-bound notebook against her chest. "They tried to intercept my transport at the gate, Don Julian. But Elliot’s men took out the attackers before they could reach me. I have what your father left. The Falcones have been draining your family’s accounts for years, using Victoria to seal the takeover."
Michael lowered his head, unable to look Allison in the eye. "I didn't know about the Falcone cartel, Julian... I swear! Victoria told me we were just protecting our own shares!"
"You were a pawn, little brother," Elliot said coldly, glancing at Michael with disgust. "Victoria played you like a cheap violin. She needed Julian’s signature to legally dissolve the Moretti trust under the guise of an estate merger. Once that happened, both of you were scheduled to die in a convenient 'mob retaliation' shootout by dawn."
"And what’s your angle, Elliot?" Julian questioned, stepping closer until only two paces separated him from his newly discovered brother. "You expect me to believe you breached my estate just to play the hero?"
"I don't need to play anything," Elliot said, reaching inside his jacket slowly. Daniel raised his weapon, but Julian held up a hand. Elliot pulled out a thumb drive and tossed it to Julian.
"That contains every transaction Victoria and her father made over the last three years, including the purchase of the synthetic poison used on Allison tonight," Elliot continued. "I don't want Vincent’s throne, Julian. I have my own empire in Chicago. But I promised the old man on his deathbed that I wouldn't let the Moretti name be erased by the Falcones."
Before Julian could insert the drive, the mansion's main power cut entirely, plunging the cellar into absolute blackness.

Over the intercom, a panicked guard’s voice crackled: "Don Julian! Heavy gunfire at the front entrance! Falcone hit squads just breached the courtyard!"
