Chapter 3 - Whispers in the Dark

The harsh crimson glare of the emergency lights bathed Julian’s study in the color of fresh blood. Outside, the muffled sound of engine roars and splintering wood signaled that the outer gates had been completely breached.
"Daniel, get the security team to the north gate. Secure Allison at all costs," Julian commanded without breaking eye contact with Victoria.
"Right away, Don Julian," Daniel replied, drawing his weapon as he sprinted out the side corridor.
Michael stepped backward toward the door, his hands trembling as he raised them defensively. "Julian, listen to me! This wasn't supposed to happen like this! We just needed the funds transferred. Nobody was supposed to get hurt!"
"Shut up, Michael!" Victoria hissed, her voice cutting through the panic like a razor blade. She pulled a sleek, silver burner phone from her clutch and tapped the screen once. "He didn't sign. Initiate phase two."
Julian moved with terrifying speed. Before Victoria could lower her arm, his hand clamped around her wrist, twisting it upward with enough force to make the phone clatter across the hardwood floor. He shoved her back against the bookshelf, trapping her under his shadow.
"Who is Elliot Ricci?" Julian demanded, his voice dangerously low. "And why did my father write a hundred-and-twenty-million-dollar trust to a stranger?"
Victoria grimaced from the pain in her wrist, but a spiteful, mocking smile curled her lips. "A stranger? Is that what your father told you? He kept you in the dark your entire life, Julian. He made you believe you were his only true successor, the untouchable Don of the Moretti empire. But you’re just the muscle."
"Julian, please!" Michael pleaded from the doorway. "Dad had another family! Elliot Ricci isn't a stranger—he’s our half-brother! Dad transferred all the offshore liquid capital into Elliot's name before he died. The only way Victoria and I could access our rightful inheritance was through the midnight trustee override!"
Julian felt a cold realization settle into his chest. His father, Don Vincent Moretti, had ruled with an iron fist, demanding absolute loyalty from his sons. Yet in the shadows of his twilight years, the old man had hidden an entire lineage—and the bulk of the family fortune—behind an untouchable trust.
"And Allison?" Julian asked, tightening his grip slightly on Victoria. "What did the maid have to do with any of this?"
"She wasn't just a maid," Victoria sneered, refusing to look defeated. "Her mother was Vincent’s private nurse during his final months. Allison found the original handwritten ledger Vincent left behind. She came to the party tonight to hand it to you, Julian. She wanted you to know the truth before I married you."
"So you poisoned her water to keep her mouth shut," Julian said, disgust coating every syllable.
"Michael was supposed to give her a sedative to delay her until the party ended," Victoria snapped, casting a venomous glare at her accomplice. "The idiot used the wrong vial from my family's private supply. He panicked!"
"I didn't mean to!" Michael shouted, his voice cracking under the weight of his guilt. "I thought it was just a sleeping draught! When she collapsed in front of the guests, I knew we were finished!"
Suddenly, Julian’s desk phone lit up again. The caller ID flashed the same encrypted number from minutes before.
Julian kept his gun trained on Victoria while reaching over to hit the speakerphone button.
"Speak," Julian said.
The calm, youthful voice of Elliot Ricci echoed into the room once more. "Good evening, Julian. It sounds like my little brother and your charming fiancée have already ruined your celebration."
"You're on my property," Julian stated flatly.
May you like
"Not just your property, Julian. I’m currently standing in your basement wine cellar," Elliot replied smoothly. "And I have Allison with me. If you want her to stay alive long enough to read you our father’s final will, tell your guards to disarm. We have five minutes before Victoria’s private militia wipes out everyone on this estate."
