Chapter 9 - The Courtroom Ambush

Forty-eight hours later, we were standing inside Courtroom 4B of the Richmond District Court for Mark’s preliminary arraignment on the felony assault and battery charges.
Mark sat at the defense table beside his high-priced criminal attorney, Carlisle, who looked smug. Diane sat in the second row of the gallery, wearing an oversized black hat and dark sunglasses, shooting daggers at me every time I turned my head.
Carlisle stood up when the judge called the case. "Your Honor, we move for an immediate dismissal of the felony assault charges against Mr. Vance. We have evidence proving extreme provocation."
Judge Eleanor Vance (an elected official with no ties to the family, though she looked thoroughly annoyed to share the surname) adjusted her spectacles. "What evidence, Mr. Carlisle?"
"The alleged victim, Ethan Sterling, is a professionally trained, state-ranked mixed martial artist," Carlisle declared, projecting his voice for the spectators. "His hands are legally considered lethal weapons. Our client, Mr. Vance, was acting in reasonable fear for his personal safety after Mr. Sterling aggressively stood up and threatened him at a private family gathering. Mr. Vance’s strike was a preemptive measure of self-defense."
Carlisle looked back at Mark, giving him an encouraging nod. Mark puffed out his chest, smiling faintly at Diane.
"Is the Commonwealth prepared to respond?" Judge Vance asked the prosecutor.
Arthur Vance stood up from our bench. "Your Honor, as special counsel representing the victims, we would like to submit Commonwealth's Exhibit C. It is the raw audio and video feed captured not from a handheld phone, but from the high-definition security system installed on the Vance patio—a system Mr. Vance forgot was synchronized to Claire Sterling’s personal cloud."
Carlisle frowned. "Objection! We haven't had time to review—"
"Overruled," Judge Vance snapped. "Play the clip."
The courtroom screens flickered to life. The audio was crystal clear.
*“You think you have the right to talk back to my mother?”* Mark’s voice boomed through the speakers.
The screen showed me sitting calmly. Then it showed Mark unscrewing the beer bottle, pouring it directly over my head, and laughing. It captured Ethan standing up slowly, saying, *“Touch her again and we’re leaving.”*
Then came the audio of Mark laughing, saying *“You? Sit down,”* followed by the sickening crunch of Mark’s fist striking Ethan’s jaw. Ethan didn't move forward. Ethan didn't raise a fist. He simply stood there, bleeding, asking, *“Claire?”*
The entire courtroom fell dead silent.
Judge Vance took off her glasses. She looked at Mark with unfiltered contempt. "Self-defense, Mr. Carlisle? Your client committed an unprovoked, premeditated battery against his wife, followed by felony assault on an individual who had his hands down."
Carlisle’s face was beet-red. He sat down without saying another word.
"Bail is revoked," Judge Vance ordered, striking her gavel with a sound like a gunshot. "Defendant will be remanded into custody pending trial. Next case."
Two bailiffs immediately stepped forward, grabbing Mark by the arms.
"Mom! Carlisle, do something!" Mark screamed, thrashing against the handcuffs as he was dragged toward the holding cells. "Claire! You can't do this to me!"

Diane fainted in the second row, tumbling off the wooden bench with a muffled thud.
