Chapter 4 - The Freeze

The morning sun blazed hot and merciless over the county jail. Mark Vance stepped through the heavy metal exit doors, rubbing his chafed wrists. His designer shirt was wrinkled, his breath stale, and his ego battered, but the entitlement in his eyes remained intact. Diane was waiting by her silver Mercedes, wearing dark sunglasses to hide the puffiness of an entire night spent crying.

"Did you get the lawyer?" Mark barked as he yanked open the passenger door.

"Carlisle is meeting us at the country club," Diane said, her hands trembling on the steering wheel. "Mark, the neighbors saw everything. Mrs. Higgins already texted me asking why the police were at our house! Do you have any idea how humiliating this is?"

"Claire is going to pay for this," Mark hissed, slamming his fist against the dashboard. "She thinks she can embarrass me? I’m locking her out of every account. I’m canceling her credit cards. She’ll come crawling back on her knees by lunch."

He pulled out his phone and dialed his private banker at Wells Fargo.

"Good morning, this is Mark Vance. I need an immediate stop-payment on all secondary cards issued under my corporate and personal accounts."

There was a long pause on the other end.

"Mr. Vance?" the banker’s voice sounded unusually guarded. "I was just about to call you. We received a certified court order from the Richmond Circuit Court at eight-fifteen this morning."

Mark frowned. "What court order? What are you talking about?"

"A temporary restraining order on all assets tied to the Sterling-Vance Trust, along with a freeze on your primary checking, savings, and the commercial line of credit for Vance Logistics."

"You can't freeze my commercial line!" Mark shouted. "I have payroll on Friday!"

"The order was filed under suspicion of grand larceny and fraudulent asset transfer, Mr. Vance. Furthermore, the two-hundred-thousand-dollar draft sent to 'Diane’s Haute Couture' has been recalled due to unauthorized power of attorney."

Diane swerved the car, barely missing a mailbox. "What did he say about my store?!"

Mark went pale. "Listen to me, that is my account! My name is on the signature card!"

"Actually, sir, your name was added via an amendment that the court has flagged as potentially fraudulent. All funds have been reverted to an escrow account managed by Vance & Sterling Legal. Good day, sir."

The line went dead.

Mark stared at the blank screen, his mouth hanging open. Beside him, Diane’s phone began to chime violently with incoming alerts—her suppliers, her landlord, her payroll manager, all demanding immediate payment for bounced transfers.

"Mark..." Diane whispered, terror cracking her voice. "What did you do?"

"Drive to the penthouse," Mark ordered, his voice shaking with sudden rage. "Drive right now. She’s there. She has to be."
